Tiger Woods Is The Don Corleone of Golf

Marlon Brando's Godfather mob boss Don Corleone ain't go nothing on Tiger Woods.  The world's best golfer is clearly the boss of the PGA Tour.  Here are two examples as proof.

Yesterday, the AP's Doug Ferguson reported that Tiger Woods would be fined for his comments about rules official John Paramor after the Bridgestone Invitational.  Then, at the PGA Championship press room this afternoon, he told reporters that he wasn't being fined - and it was an erroneous report.

Sure enough, the PGA Tour's Ty Votaw came out and said that Woods was not being fined and the AP's source was wrong.

"The information conveyed to the AP reporter [by an anonymous source] was inaccurate," he said. "There has been no process started with regards to any disciplinary action." PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem did not consider Tiger's comments "unreasonable," Votaw added.

I guess since the ratings for the Bridgestone Invitational were double last year's - matching the average ratings impact of Woods' 2009 starts on 2008 ratings - the Tour really couldn't fine the guy who made them a ton of money over the weekend.

The second example deals with golf in the Olympics.  The aforementioned Votaw is leading the charge to get golf into the 2016 Olympics.  It hasn't been played in the games since 1904.  A lot of the question around golf getting into the Olympics surrounded if Tiger Woods would play.  Today, he also confirmed that he would play in the Olympics - if he were still playing competitive golf at age 40.

"If I'm not retired by then, yeah," Woods said. Asked again if he would play, Woods nodded his head and said, "Yep."

Now, it's practically a dead lock that golf will get into the Olympics.

There are plenty of other examples, but these are just the latest to serve as proof that Tiger runs the PGA Tour.

lol - good stuff !

Giving Dougie the benefit of the doubt, eh ? (lol)

Steve Williams was overheard on the range next to Tiger after he denied the fine story saying, “I’m smart !!! I know how to do things !!”

You did NOT...

…just go Fredo on me.

I’m going to blame Ferguson’s “anonymous source” for the phantom fine. I know Tiger wields a lot of power, but I refuse to believe the fine was levied and then rescinded. The dude is, or is nearly, a billionaire. He would have blown into his wallet and dislodged enough to gladly cover whatever tiny fine they could throw at him, simply out of principle for standing up for what he said.

Speaking of which, here’s a guy who works hard to avoid controversy and never says anything of substance who finally gave something juicy. To stick with the Godfather theme, it would have been like when Sonny smashed that guy’s camera outside the wedding and peeled off a couple of bills and threw it on the ground and walked away.

no way – even if the mysterious “official” offered the information without being asked – Dougie screwed up by not getting confirmation.

You’re right – Tiger doesn’t seem to fight the fine system. If he’s wrong, he owns up to it.

Are you talking about Ferguson giving something juicy ? A weak, baseless story that turned out to be complete fiction isn’t “juicy” – it’s embarrassing. Sonny at least had a reason to break the camera.

No I wasn’t talking about Ferguson giving something juicy. It was kind of a completely different train of thought. Just pointing out how Tiger never says anything of substance, and then he’s finally annoyed enough to call out an official on a decision publicly. I didn’t really mean to tie that in with the fine part, just the tirade that led to the phantom fine.

Tiger Corleone...

…I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your home on the wedding day of your daughter. And may their first child be a masculine child.

it cracks me up

that the PGA Tour is Tiger’s own little Banana Republic. He interviews himself after winning his own tournament, changes peoples’ minds for them when they’re about to fine him, etc. They just oughta dispense with the formalities, have Finchy step down and let Tiger take over as Commissioner also. Alright, it’s a Godfather forum, so here it is already:

Finchy: “I want your PGA Championship entry fee and I want an answer in 24 hours.”
Tiger: “You can have my answer now, Commissioner. Nothing. And I’d appreciate if the Tour would pick up my entry fees for all tournaments going forward.”
