Once Again, The Official World Golf Rankings Lie
The most recent Official World Golf Rankings were published this morning. It is no surprise to anyone that Tiger Woods is number one and Phil Mickelson is second, with Paul Casey and Kenny Perry occupying the 3rd and 4th spots.
Tiger's lead over Phil is pretty substantial - 12.93 versus 8.97 with Paul and Kenny at 6.65 and 6.27, respectively. But, sometimes, as I tell my new best friend - courtgolf - figures lie and liars figure.
If you have not played at least forty tournaments in a full two-year period, the OWGR guys still divide your total points by forty (40). Tiger has accumulated 517.28 points, but, because he missed most of last year with his knee surgery, he has only played in twenty-two tournaments that count toward points. So, in actuality, Tiger's average per tournament OWGR point tally is 23.51.
That silly number is more than Phil, Paul, Kenny and Chad Campbell (#50) combined. That is comparable to Randy Moss having more receiving yards than Ocho Cinco, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquon Boldin and me combined.
Rather stellar, I might say...

I’d call that being pretty nice to the rest of the field – some of these guys might just throw themselves off the nearest bridge if they saw the real number. :-)
Has Mickelnuts played in 40 the last 2 years ? What is his “actual” number ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Phil has played
in 43 tournaments in the past 24 months..

Thanks for the laugh...
Mickelnuts…still funny.
I will again take an opportunity to shamelessly plug my lengthy article that explains all of the OWGR biases and what they mean for golf – including this one against Tiger.

Good call, OEG!

Ryan, I forgot how comprehensive that post was. To anyone wishing to truly understand how points are distributed,
earned and/or lost, read RB’s post.

I Hate the OWGR
I have never cared much for the OWGR except when seeing who is on the bubble for the Accenture Match Play Championship in the early part of the season. To give myself some enjoyment, I keep my own ranking system that awards points for top 30-50 finishes (depending on how many ranked players are in the field a “normal” tournament can be worth 30, 40, or 50 points for a win). The majors are 200, Players/TOUR/European Dubai Championship 150, and WGC are 100. FedEx playoff events also receive their own special amount of points. The Mercedes Championship I give 80 pts. just for kicks. Golfers can also earn bonus points for winning by 5-10 shots, 10+ shots, shooting the best low round of the day, shooting a 63 or lower, etc. They are also given negative points for withdrawing, shooting over 80, and shooting the worst round of the day.
The only two tours I include are the European and U.S. PGA tours, but I have fun doing it. It definitely helps me when making fantasy golf picks.

Mr. United, can I venture
a guess who might be numero uno on your rating system?

I might actually start posting them here every week just for kicks. My plan is to halve the points that are finalized at the end of this season and carry them over to next year. Due to Tiger being hurt for the first half of the year he hasn’t yet gotten to #1, but he’s very close. My system rewards consist results so that is why Perry and Stricker (2 wins this year) are at the top:
#1: Kenny Perry (767 pts.)
#2: Steve Stricker (753 pts.)
#3: Tiger Woods (719 pts.)
#4: Retief Goosen (699 pts.)
#5: Geoff Ogilvy (651 pts.)
Basically, if Tiger wins the PGA he’ll have a huge lock on the top spot. Perry has been in the #1 spot since the Masters save for one week when Phil Mickelson took his place.

By all means, post them! I’ll throw them on the front page. I creating a ranking system of my own a few months ago and kept it going for a few weeks to show that it works ok, but would love to see yours.

Cool. I’ll see if I can post my top 25 (or would you prefer top 10 or 15) tonight.
