A US Women's Open Preview That Has Nothing to Do With Carolyn Bivens
Play in the 64th US Women's Open begins tomorrow at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA. In Bee Park is the defending champion on a course that will play to a yardage of 6740 yards and a par of 71 (though, as I'll talk about later today, par doesn't really matter). Hound Dog expects that there will be no players under par at the end of the tournament, though.
Again, Mike Davis and his staff are behind the setup of the championship. Last year at Interlachen, Davis had five par 5s on the card. This year, there are just three. There is the possibility of two driveable par 4s on the back nine, intentionally placed by Davis to incite excitement and shot value for the players and spectators. Fairways will range from 25 to 35 yards in width and the rough setup will be similar to what you would see at a US Open.
As mentioned in other stories, several players of note are not in the field - in part due to a change in the selection criteria of the USGA for the championship. Still, the field is very strong. It also features 29 amateur players and, as Mark Wogenrich notes, 26 teenagers. Among those players are both Alexis Thompson (14) and Kimberly Kim (17) who have a career's worth of experience in this championship already.
This is the title that every female golfer wants to win. Dottie Pepper noted in her golf.com column this week that she would trade in her two major championships for having a single US Women's Open crown. On top of that, though, the money certainly is good. The $3.2 million purse is the largest on the Tour by far and will award $585,000 to the winner.
In a prior post, I said that my favorites were Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, and Jiyai Shin. Regardless of the winner, I expect some great golf this weekend.

Did the golf media learn a lesson from last year?
Interlachen because of its length and 5 par fives was supposed to favor the big hitters(Ochoa) and the leaderboard at the end of play on Sunday was dominated by players best described as average or less than average in length off the tee. Ochoa isn’t the resounding favorite this year, so they must be trying to come up with a different theme/

Everyone continues to say that only the bombers win the men’s Open. Not universally true at all. Same is true for women. We have to get over that notion.

I don’t see many “bombers” on the favorites list at the Women’s Open. Angela Stanford gets some picks, but she is #11 on the distance list. Yani Tseng is #1 in driving distance – but she has a lot more game than just a big driver. Suzanne Pettersen is #4, but she’s still recovering from injuries and isn’t getting picked to win in the media.
(personally, I think we’re doing a better job with picks than the “mainstream media”) :-)
The Biv is taking a lot of shots this week – so she should also get an “atta-girl” for refusing to address the LPGA situation this week and possibly distracting attention from the USGA’s event.

She is doing the right thing to say nothing to further distract away from the biggest women’s event of the year. Too bad I think she’ll be the spotlight of the month long LPGA Tour break in the US with her resignation.

ESPN
ESPN has coverage of the Women’s Open – any bets on whether Berman shows up in the booth ?

I will bet no since it seems like Berman only calls non-baseball events where he wants to meet somebody (i.e., Tiger). At the Open between the 3rd and 4th round, I was standing on the range and watching guy warm up. In saunters Berman with his stupid hat on and walks right over to Stevie Williams – standing alone in a drizzle with no umbrella & just Tiger’s bag – and starts talking to him like they’re best buddies. For one of the few times in my life, I felt bad for Steve Williams.

That could be an excellent point with no Natalie Gulbis, no Michelle Wie, and no Anna Rawson in the field. Ochoa’s fiance could probably buy and sell Berman 10 times over if he started hitting on her. :-D
Great story about Stevie Williams !
