The LPGA Schedule Screwed Over Michelle Wie from Getting Into the Open
There has been quite a bit of uproar about the USGA's modified exemption criteria into the US Women's Open. Randall Mell has been doing a good job with the Golf Channel of covering the story of how the USGA changed it criteria for 2009.
Here's how the criteria used to work:
[T]he USGA offered exemptions to the top 40 players on the season-ending money list from the previous year, plus the top 35 on the money list as of June 1 of the current year.
For 2009, that criteria changed to this:
[T]he top 50 off the final 2008 money list were exempt, plus the top 10 on the money list as of June 1, 2009.
This has created quite a stir among the LPGA Tour, its fans, and players like Vicky Hurst, Michelle Wie, and Natalie Gulbis - all of which would have made the US Women's Open field under the old criteria.
Now, the LPGA Tour has zero input or influence when it comes to the determination of this criteria. But, the rationale that the USGA's Mike Butz gave for the change was influenced directly by the lack of events on the LPGA Tour schedule this season.
With the shrinking women’s schedule, USGA officials became concerned that the LPGA was playing just 11 regular events before the June 1 money list criteria kicked in for the current year. By comparison, the PGA Tour played 23 events prior to June 1.
"The women used to play 15 events (by June 1)," Butz said. "There was a question whether it was right to exempt the top 35 off just 11 events."
In other words, the exemption criteria changed because the USGA felt that the LPGA Tour would not have played enough events this season to identify 35 players that were having a consistent season. That could be called into question, but the basis of the decision is fairly sound. If there were more events, the USGA would feel more comfortable exempting more players.
Given how next season is shaping up, I cannot see the USGA changing the criteria for 2010 at Oakmont.

what a pantload
Yes – the USGA and the LPGA put together a conspiracy to keep Michelle Wie out of the US Open. That is the biggest load of crap I have heard in a long time.
Oh wait – the theory falls apart because Wie didn’t play well enough to earn a spot in qualifying. This rule change wasn’t made after Wie failed to earn her spot just to keep her out.
Wie isn’t the only player who didn’t make the Open because of this rule – why isn’t there more attention on them ? Oh yeah – because she’s “the savior of women’s golf”…nevermind that she hasn’t won anything since she was 13 years old.
This may not be the brightest rule change in the history of the game – but please – enough with the conspiracy theories.

I don’t think it’s a conspiracy theory at all. It just so happens that Gulbis, Hurst, and Wie would have gotten in through the old criteria.

Then again, that’s just me. Some people might have their tin hats on.

Ahem...
…and I quote – “The LPGA Schedule Screwed Over Michelle Wie from Getting Into the Open”.
First of all – the LPGA doesn’t decide the rules of qualifying – and if a group screws over a player, that is, by definition, a conspiracy.
This was probably a dumb rule change in light of the names that didn’t get exempted in – and they could have probably run a computer projection to see what might happen – but the theory was sound. They wanted to have more players that were consistently in the top of the rankings.

The LGPA schedule DID screw over Wie. The schedule was so thin that the USGA couldn’t keep the old exemption criteria. :)

OH MY GOD !! The LPGA somehow got sponsors to drop out and businesses to go under JUST to keep Michelle Wie out of the US Open !!
Why isn’t this front page of the Washington Post ? Or at least the Enquirer ?

You’re completely missing the point. The LPGA Tour didn’t purposefully do this to Wie. I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying that the toll of having a thin schedule inadvertently hurt Wie, Gulbis from making the Open under the old criteria.

I see – so ONLY Michelle Wie was the target of all of this.
For someone to be “screwed” there has to be intent. Wie blew it with her play in the qualifier.
You can’t blame anything on the LPGA (which you said) or the schedule – the schedule is what it is. If this is your point, then Wie should have gone to Q-school the year before last so she would have had all the tournaments to get her ranking up to where the USGA was trying to go with the new rule.
However – it IS possible that behind the scenes, the sponsors who dropped out were secretly contacted by the USGA so that Michelle Wie wouldn’t be able to qualify for the Open….wait..unless the savior of women’s golf actually managed to WIN a tournament….but how much can one savior do ? :-D

Like I said, it’s all inadvertent. (Remember my thing about writing headlines to rile people up? :))
It’s just interesting that Wie would have likely made it (as well as Gulbis) if there hadn’t been such a drought in the schedule.

sorry – can’t blame the schedule. doesn’t work that way. that’s right up there with all the football announcers who say “if they had one more quarter, they would have won”. it’s a ridiculous argument.
but it was fun pulling your chain. :-D

Very easy to blame the schedule. If there were 14 or 15 events, the USGA wouldn’t have made the change and Wie would be in the Open. Very easy.

the schedule is what it is – you can only play what is in front of you – BUT – Wiesy turned her back on the LPGA and chose to play only her 6 exemptions instead of going to Q-school so she could play more. her own arrogance kept her out of the Open.
