Rumor: Condi Rice to Augusta National? How Far Golf Has Come!
Jaime Diaz's column at Golf Digest is a little dated by Internet standards - I think I read it last week. But, it poses a seemingly timeless question: when will a woman become a member at Augusta National?
Given the game's historically poor record in dealing with gender and race relations, the question of whether or not Augusta National should invite a woman to become a member is a completely different battle. Diaz, though, is suggesting that former Secretary of State Condi Rice may well become the first female member at the storied club.
I'm guessing that one topic of discussion for the green jackets will be the implications of the midweek cameo by Condoleezza Rice, who not only made herself more visible at the club than any political figure since President Eisenhower, but then blogged about it for a cheeky website, The Daily Beast.
I think something bigger was going on, namely the first public hints since the end of Hootie Johnson's reign that the ultimate men's club is seriously considering bringing in its first female member.
In her blog, Rice's line that "Clearly, the faces of Augusta are changing as America is changing" seemed farcically diplomatic, unless she knows something we don't. But when she singled out Fuzzy Zoeller as "another favorite of mine,"she came off as a potential healer.
Diaz may be engaging in rampant speculation here. He could be reaching for a story. But given his excellent track record, I'd hardly suggest that. Augusta National will move at its own pace, but if it does bring Rice - or any woman - into its exclusive ranks, it might serve as the greatest possible beacon that golf is opening its doors to all.
It might also help get us away from the epoch of golf that Triple Bogey Apparel's blog reminds us was not too far in the sport's rear view mirror.

Diaz is late…but you pull up an almost 50 year old statute that hasn’t existed in almost that long ? hmm (nudge nudge) :-D
What is with you guys ? Why do you insist on sticking your nose in Augusta National’s business ?
Diaz is a pitiful excuse for a reporter – and this just adds to the resume. “The ultimate men’s club” ?? Lame. Especially when I can step out of my office and hit three “women only” businesses with a 9-iron.
BUT – if you’re going to break the gender line – Condi is an excellent choice.

I don’t really care about Augusta’s membership choices so long as they don’t actively discriminate. Choosing not to have a female member is not active discrimination in my mind. I just thought the rumor was interesting.

of COURSE they “actively discriminate” – there is no other way to discriminate. discrimination is a choice…and we ALL do it. If the membership says we won’t have any women as members – that is discrimination. big deal – it’s a private club – and women play quite a few rounds of golf at Augusta National – wives, girlfriends, collegiate golfer-ettes, professionals… AN doesn’t even have a membership application – you have to be invited by a member. even players who win The Masters aren’t real members – just honorary members. The only living past champions who are members are Palmer and Nicklaus.

There is actually a difference between active and passive discrimination. There have been studies done at Harvard and other universities to suggest that people can discriminate against others without even realizing it.

wait – George Bush went to Harvard…so it can’t be a place of higher learning….oh wait…Obama went there and he is the smartest man on the planet…wait…I’m confused. :-)
so a study done at Harvard has the ability to redefine the verb discrimination. It doesn’t matter if you intend to or not – the result is active against a person, place or thing. then again, I don’t have a degree in psychobabble…just English. :-D

great post. i wrote a long comment and deleted it.
this is a really interesting topic to me, augusta representing what it does to the game of golf makes its policy changes newsworthy for sure.
just seems to be such old school thinking, culturally irrelevant, and ..well boring to have all male clubs in 2009. but I ain’t a member at Augusta :)

exactly ! you get the point. It doesn’t matter what you think of the Augusta National club – you’re not a member. Augusta National isn’t the only men only club in America – and there are hundreds of women only clubs, organizations, and businesses that are for women only in the US. the media didn’t bother pointing out the fact that of the more than 100 organizations in Burke’s little girl’s club – almost half were women only. she is a world class hypocrite on the level of a Jesse Jackson.

That’s totally the point of this post. ANGC admitting a woman would be very important given the symbolism it holds in the golf world. If they don’t feel like doing that, oh well.

ah yes – symbolism – that’s what we need – more symbolism. a small club of a hundred or so members admitting a woman will save the world.
wow – then women would be allowed to have jobs in public…and go to school in Iraq…and not have to cover their faces in public in any Muslim country…

That’s why I said symbolism in the golf world :)
There is a whole lot of worse discrimination and violence committed against women in this country and every country.

The only symbolism that Augusta National has is in the imagination of the media, which spills over into the feral “minds” of people like Martha Burke.
When are you going to reverse the jets and demand that the members of Augusta National be admitted into women only organizations ?

I think you’re really diminishing the importance and symbolism of Augusta. They’re a private club with a very public face.

They have a public face one week a year. They mind their own business – now THERE’S a lesson to be learned.
