Mickelson to To Play WGC Bridgestone Invitational & PGA Championship
Yesterday, the PGA Tour has announced that Phil Mickelson has committed to play in next week's event before the PGA Championship - the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone CC. This from the PGA Tour's Twitter page:
NEWS: Phil Mickelson has committed to play in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational next week.
Today, it was announced by the PGA of America that Phil Mickelson will indeed play at the PGA Championship at Hazeltine.
Fanhouse was reporting that Mickelson was hinting toward a return at the Barclays after the PGA Championship. Perhaps a PGA Championship appearance at Hazeltine is in the offing as well.
Mickelson indicated recently that surgery to remove cancer from his wife Amy's breast proved successful and that the spread of the cancer was smaller than previously thought - both encouraging signs for the family.

why isn’t there this much hoopla when Mickelson starts his season after shutting it down in September ? He takes 3 months off and nobody calls it “returning”. He skipped 3 or 4 weeks the first time, and 3 weeks this time – skipping tournaments he either doesn’t usually play or doesn’t usually contend in. He has taken periods of time like this off pretty regularly during his career – and we don’t get these frenzied stories that sound like the Tour was ready to fall apart because he wasn’t there. This isn’t a season long absence – not even half a season – just a few weeks.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I don’t think the return itself is all that big of a deal for the reasons you stated. For me, it’s more of an indicator of Amy’s health if he feels good enough about it to come out and play – particularly at Firestone, where’s kinda so-so.
