One Eyed Open: Woods Clearly Struggling Going into Buick

It is true that Tiger won the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, MI the last time he played it in 2006. He had four consecutive 66s and and beat Jim Furyk by three shots. Tiger had 28 birdies against just 4 bogeys.

But that was 2006.  Obviously 2009 is a completely different story. Sure, he is still number one in the world rankings by a country mile, and he is number one in the 2009 PGA Tour stats for all-around player, and he is winning 30% of the tournaments he is entering this year.

So what?

And - big deal - his scoring average has him 3.88 strokes per tournament better than the next guy, he has won eighteen PGA Tour events since the 2006 Buick. and his average winnings per tournament is almost double the next guy.  Yeah, big deal.

I hope he can shake off this slump and somehow pull out a decent year in 2009. I'm sure his on course demeanor has triggered this poor play.

toungue planted firmly in cheek ???

10 starts – 9 cuts made – 8 top 10’s – 3 wins.

subtract the three majors (just to separate them from regular events like the Buick) and the match play – and he has 3 wins in 6 starts. Take away a couple of early starts when he was still trying to get his left leg back under him, and he has won 3 of 4. (see Ryan ? I’m learning to work with statistics !!) :-D

I don’t worry about Turnberry very much. He played some very bad golf (for him) on a course he wasn’t very familiar with – but now he’s moving to a course he has dominated in the past. He may not win this week – but he’ll be back in the top 10.

Now for a step into the silly…has he won (a) the tournament 2 weeks before each major ? Or (b) has he just won his last start before the major ? If you buy into (a), he should win this week. If you buy into (b), he’ll win (again) in Akron…or will he win both and not win the PGA ? See ? Told you it would get silly.

I think I concur,

court, but only to a certain point. Maybe. You are starting to know me too well…

lol – well – blame RB – his statistical abilities are rubbing off on me. (JUST kidding RB !!) :-)

I’m just not ready to draw any conclusions about Woods just yet. The guy keeps overhauling his swing – it takes a year or so, then he rips off a couple of 10 win seasons in a row. This time, he’s working with a knee that is still recovering from major surgery that takes 2 years for full healing. It’s just too early to say that he is this or that – I just know that every time people have said that he’s done, they’ve been wrong.

OEG, I hope you don’t mind that I’ve decided on a clever name for your posts over here. I’m trying to work out equally clever names for court, Bill, HD, and TC – the regulars. :)

Have you checked out the field for the Buick? With the exception of Furyk, there are no top tier players to challenge El Tigre. That’s not to say that every single player in the field isn’t capable of shooting 65-65-65-65, but Tiger & Furyk SHOULD lap the field this week.

My prediction is that Tiger will win AT LEAST two of the next three tournaments… He owns the Buick & The Bridgestone, and I think if he wins them both, then he will probably win the PGA.

Maybe not presently in the top 10 – but I don’t consider guys like Duval, Crane, Sabattini, Leonard, Campbell, Snedeker….and at least a dozen others in the field, to be pushovers.

Where was Tiger when Glover won the US Open and the whole world was ready to hand Tiger the trophy before the first shot was struck ? How about Cabrera at Augusta ? Oh wait – Stewart Cink…no – Tiger didn’t win there either.

If all you look at is the rankings – then EVERY tournament is weak – including the Majors…especially if Tiger doesn’t win. That’s what happens when you’re sitting on top of the mountain.

Tiger hasn’t played 3 weeks in a row in a very long time. Do you think the “old man” and his bionic knee are up to the stress ? :-)
