Fantasy Crystal Ball: RBC Canadian Open

Let's come down off of the amazing Open Championship and now turn to the third most important national open tournament. It's the RBC Canadian Open this weekend at Glen Abbey. Abbey has basically turned into the annual host course for the tournament. It's sad for an event that used to travel around to more Canadian classics, but Abbey is a capable host.
The field is not lackluster, but it certainly isn't the caliber of what we saw this past weekend. Chez Reavie is defending champion and the odds say that he will not repeat as champion. That doesn't mean that a modest hitter can't win here. Glen Abbey is a positioning golf course. It's not quite in the same company as Turnberry in that regard, but the concept is similar.
Now, to the picks. Put Mike Weir on your team. Please. This tournament may as well be called the Mike Weir Open. The guy has to win this damn thing someday. Maybe some good vibes will help Weir capture his national title.

Stephen Ames is a Canadian, but he's really from Trinidad & Tobago. That doesn't count in my book. And his record in this tournament - to quote Bill Walton - is horrrribbble.
Sean O'Hair is a decent pick, having finished with the bronze in two of the last three years. He seems to like thinker's courses and Glen Abbey fits.
I am heartbroken by Steve Marino's third round performance, but he may have learned a hell of a lot from playing with Tom Watson on Saturday. It may be time for him to convert those lessons into a PGA Tour win. He is way more accomplished than Chez Reavie.
How about Retief Goosen? He sure seems to like giving up 54 hole leads this season, but the guy will get you some solid points on your team.
It's a bit of an open field this week. Laugh at the pun. Either way, I think my dark horse for the week will be Lee Janzen. Good luck with week and enjoy the golf!

Mike Weir really needs to step up this year. He was so close a few years back when he and Vijay got into that incredible playoff. You could see that Vijay wanted Weir to win, but he wasn’t going to LET Weir win. Weir had a couple of chances, tough chances, but chances all the same and the putts just didn’t fall.

Yeah, that was one of the tougher moments to watch in a non-major for the last decade. That, or Greg Owen self-destructing at Bay Hill.

Greg Owen was tough – but he didn’t have a nation of people standing around the green cheering and groaning with every shot. I have never seen a look like Vijay’s when Weir couldn’t close out.
