Kevin Costner: Tin Cup Ruined My Life. America: Fair Trade
In a press conference before the RBC Canadian Open pro-am this week, Kevin Costner said that playing Roy McAvoy in the golf movie Tin Cup "ruined [his] life."
Wait a minute. Despite the numerous implausible things that Shane Bacon has pointed out about Tin Cup, it remains one of the great golf movies of all time. Rene Russo when she was in her prime. Cheech Marin, albeit not stoned. Don Johnson reprising his role as Sonny Crockett as golf maven David Simms. You're telling me that Tin Cup ruined your life?
Fine. If you want to be that way, fine. Tin Cup came out after Waterworld - one of the all-time crappiest movies. This was his make-up flick with America. Then he goes on to roll out these turds since then:
- Swing Vote (2008)
- Mr. Brooks (2007)
- The Guardian (2006/I)
- Rumor Has It... (2005)
- The Upside of Anger (2005)
- Open Range (2003)
- Dragonfly (2002)
- 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)
- Thirteen Days (2000)
- For Love of the Game (1999)
- Message in a Bottle (1999)
- The Postman (1997)
Of those, only For Love of the Game is really passable. And he played a Detroit Tiger in that movie. Costner has few peers in the category of "fallen actors" and they include such illustrious names as Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy, and John Travolta. Helen Hunt even had it better than Costner - and she's doing movies on Lifetime now.
So, Costner, don't tell me for a second that you blame Tin Cup for ruining your life. Blame your agent first, pal.

Just watched the video...
…what a PUTZ. Nobody cares that golf isn’t your “passion”. Nobody really cares that you’re not ready for the PGA Tour. They want to go out and, for whatever unknown reason, and see someone who has entertained them in the movies. They don’t want to hear you whine about a few whispers from people who can’t separate the movie from reality and expect you to be a great golfer.
Guess what, Costner, YOU just ruined my enjoyment of a third of your movies that I actually enjoy watching – Silverado and Field of Dreams being the other two – and he is really does a fairly crappy job of acting in those, too, but there are enough talented actors to carry him so he can just look pretty.
In the future – JUST SAY NO if the event doesn’t fit your “passion”. You won’t be missed.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
and SHAME on xxx Golf Channel for thinking that was worth airing. What moron there wants this channel to be just another tabloid channel ? Oh wait – probably the guy who thought the Natalie Gulbis show was a good idea.

I just have to say it...
You’re taking what Kevin Costner said out of context and ignoring the fact that he was joking!! The main thrust of his comment was that he isn’t a really good golfer and that because of the ‘Tin Cup’ movie people believe he is a good golfer. Obviously he feels comfortable enough to play for charity and he’s done a lot of that for years now! I enjoy all his movies that I’ve been able to see. There are some actors I won’t watch their movies because of the types of movies they make but I wouldn’t spend my precious internet time complaining about them and I don’t understand those who have way too much time, obviously, to complain about Kevin’s movies! They are good movies and I own most of them!
Haha, of course I took him out of context. That’s the point of blogging and the Internet – take people out of context and complain about them. Costner has almost exclusively done crappy movies for the past fifteen years. I mean, horrible films. Never should have been released.

Costner is one of these guys who can’t act his way out of a wet paper bag – but he has “presence” on screen. Same with Keanu Reeves (who shouldn’t be any movie that doesn’t have the word “dude” for his character at least once a sentence), and most of Brad Pitt’s career until the last few years. Give any of these guys an important line and they will invariably screw it up – but they look “cute” doing it. Thankfully, Brad Pitt has gotten a lot better with the help of Robert Redford, George Clooney, and Angelina Jolie.
