ABC's Open Championship Crew Filled With Useless Lies
Watching all of ABC's third round coverage of the Open Championship from Turnberry was painful. I did it because it's my job - a sacrifice for you - but the crew was just awful today. They made a slew of mistakes.
- Paul Azinger said that Retief Goosen had won a US Open at Oakmont. Sure didn't! Southern Hills and Shinnecock Hills. Oakmont doesn't event have "hill" in it.
- Mike Tirico said that Tom Watson made four consecutive birdies on Friday from four through seven. If he did, he would be at -12 right now. It was four bogeys.
- While reviewing the leaderboard, Tom Weiskopf completely forgot to mention the BIGGEST STORY IN GOLF IN TWENTY FIVE YEARS. He left Tom Watson off of his list of leaders, which at the time was Fisher, Westwood, and Watson.
Look, it's bad enough that we had to endure the BBC's standard definition feed of the Open Championship. Add in Curtis Strange doing his best Garth Algar impression to describe play-by-play and all of these factual errors.
Were it not for Tom Watson (& the delightful Peter Alliss), this crew and broadcast would border on unwatchable.

I heard the Goosen goof
Goosen also had the 3rd round lead at Pinehurst before blowing sky high in 2005. I think Goosen is the one I’m picking to win tomorrow.

Golf World on last week's US Open
Criticized NBC for telling viewers absolutely nothing about Eun-Hee Ji in spite of her playing in the last group. GW saying "How do they expect people to care about players with whom they are unfamiliar. NBC, like Johnny Miller, was probably expecting(and hoping) for a Kerr victory on Sunday. Preferably by a large margin.
NBC said very little about Inky or Candie Kung either. Mostly stuff that can be learned from their LPGA profiles or wikipedia entries.

Pretty amazing that TNT/ABC could bring nearly 4 complete crews to do this one tournament – and very few have been even halfway decent.
Anybody else catch Tirico yammering on during the search for Marino’s ball about only two rounds of golf being played on this course all year in preparation for The Open. I believe it was Curtis Strange who popped in about this year’s club tournament where they lost 480 balls. Pretty funny.
I’m not willing to jump on Tom Weiskopf too much. He doesn’t do this very often and his insight on the actual play has been terrific. Curtis Strange has been a pleasant surprise, too – he has really calmed down since he was a regular commentator.

Oh – and the embarrassing gaff by Judy Rankin on the second hole approach shot by Calc – said he was hitting an 8 iron, but Calc’s follow-through showed the sole of the club very clearly – showing the 7. You’d think she would know the difference in a 7 and an 8 after all these years when standing next to the players.

Nasty Coverage
I will probably upset a few with my comments, but that is why these forums exist – to express opinions on certain topics.
I concur, this TV crew was unwatchable. Unfortunately, so are many others.
I am getting to the point where I can’t stand watching golf on TV. As Ryan states its the “useless lies” and other horrendous commentary. Some TV crews are better than others but in the end they are all simply terrible in my opinion. I have started watching the European tour because they have many commentators just like Peter Aliss (yes, he is delightful) and they focus on the golf and as many of the players as possible. I am sick of watching American players who are no where near the lead, because the network feels or whoever feels they better show these particular players. Meanwhile awesome world golf talents are moving up the leader board and you would hardly ever know that. I don’t care what country the golfers are from, but if they are doing well they should get the same air time as “others” and they don’t. I am also very sick of the biased and sometimes petty comments made against non-American golfers. Yes, Paul Azinger and Curtis Strange are so guilty of this and I can’t even begin to listen to their rhetoric. I thought Tom Weiskopf did OK considering he does not do this kind of work that often.
I resorted today listening to the Open Championship on-line and turning down the volume to the TV. That worked out really well for the most part with the exception of some TV to online delays. After three days of crap announcing I just couldn’t take it anymore.
Thanks to Tom Watson he made this tournament a real pleasure to watch. Thanks to Turnberry for being one of the best golf courses on the planet!

"Lie" implies intent
You guys aren’t really saying that they INTENDED to give out bad information, are you ?
You’re not upsetting any apple carts here. With very few exceptions, most of us are sick of the bad coverage.
Azinger needs to stop “feeling” everything – or someone needs to shove a sock in his pie-hole.
Judy Rankin needs to retire – great lady, but can’t see past her nose, can’t tell clubs, STILL doesn’t understand how far these guys hit the ball, and can’t read a putt to save her life.
Mike Tirico was getting his revenge for being taken off of regular golf duties by asking 5 minute questions and trying to do analysis. Terry Gannon wasn’t any better.
Interviews were horrible.
And to show how bad it really was – I was actually enjoying Curtis Strange !! Maybe the pressure was off because he was only doing part time work – but he said some fairly intelligent thing.
The one guy worth listening to – Tom Weiskopf – needed something to wake him up. He is a slow talker – which would be alright if he wasn’t the only one making sense most of the time.
