The Decider: What's Your Favorite Open Championship Course?
This week's Decider is straightforward. The Open is at Turnberry this week - the first "man made links course" - for the fourth time. But, is it the best course in the current Open Rota? Is it the best course to ever host the Open?
Take a look at the list below of the current Rota and other courses that have fallen out of favor. What is your favorite?
Current Rota
- Old Course at St Andrews
- Carnoustie Golf Links
- Muirfield
- Turnberry Resort, Ailsa Course
- Royal Troon Golf Club
- Royal St George's Golf Club
- Royal Birkdale Golf Club
- Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club
- Royal Liverpool Golf Club
Former Open Courses
- Prestwick Golf Club - hosted 24 Opens through 1925
- Musselburgh Links - replaced by Muirfield
- Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club - hosted in 1909 and '20
- Prince's Golf Club - adjacent to Royal St. George's, hosted in '32
- Royal Portrush Golf Club - hosted in '51 and push has been made to get it back

Historically / Prestige – St. Andrews
Competitively / Layout (doesn’t necessarily mean the hardest) – Royal Lytham & St. Annes GC
Aesthetically – Turnberry – Just beautiful. Can’t wait to watch it this week.

Aesthics and Layout Runner Up
Royal Portrush – I had never seen this course before. I looked it up and it is just spectacular. This would make for some great TV and bring The Open back to Ireland. http://www.royalportrushgolfclub.com/default.aspx. I would give my left arm to play there.

wow – that’s a tough call.
St Andrews is with Augusta National and Pebble Beach as “all world” courses.
I’ve played Carnoustie and loved it – the single year of “Car-nastie” was an aberration.
Turnberry is gorgeous – as is Troon.
The only rota course I don’t much care for is Royal St George becuase the fairways are like hitting through a mine field.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
The Old Course, Followed By Royal Portrush
If there is a true holy land of all things golf, it is St. Andrews. That’s the Vatican City of the game, with the Old Course being its Sistine Chapel.
Royal Portrush’s Dunluce Links, on the other hand, is a course more than worthy of hosting moreOpen Championships, and now, in a relative time of peace from The Troubles that afflicted Northern Ireland in the 20th Century, the time may be right too.
Supposedly Tiger shot an 81 there, though the story may be apocryphal. It would be a good question for someone to ask him…Ryan?
If I ever manage to get in front of Tiger in a situation where he would speak to me again after asking him about said 81, I’ll do it. :)
