Phil Mickelson Shows You How to Hit a Golf Ball Backward & On Purpose
The Phil Mickelson short game DVD is out on shelves now. There's a good chance that even if you watch the DVD about a million times - until it doesn't play anymore - that you will never be as much of a short game genius as The People's Champion. But there is a 100% chance that you cannot pull off this shot.
Dave Pelz has a post on golf.com that highlights a part of Phil's DVD in which he shows you how to hit the ball backward. It's sick enough that he actually can do it. What's worse is that the shot lands closer to the hole than whatever jerk tried to challenge him by hitting the ball forward.
I'm going to give it a try and I'll post my results in what will surely be a concussion-inducing video.

Wish I would’ve thought of this yesterday – I had nearly that kind of lie – but probably not severe enough to pull it off. Yesterday was one of those Murphy’s Law kind of days.

Dude, he’s been the people’s champion since like 2002 when NBC bestowed the moniker on him.

Question
I couldn’t tell from the vid, but what was the position of Phil’s club? What I mean is was he hitting the ball from the wedge side or the back of the club.

The club is laid wide open – the shot is played similar to hitting a bunker shot from an extremely deep bunker and you have to hit the ball almost straight up. In this case, the club face slides under the ball even further forward than you would usually play a bunker shot with the hands releasing early so the face slides around the ball. He almost makes a spoon shape with his club face going around the ball. It’s absolutely amazing.

I love how he says “Ooooo I misread it.” Like saying, “Oh shucks. I’ll get it next time.”
