Who's On First? Saturday Edition

This is our weekend-only feature in which we talk briefly about the day to come on the major tours.  Let's give it a shot!

On the PGA Tour, Jim Furyk and Jonathan Byrd are tied for the Memorial lead at -7.  Mike Weir and Mark Wilson sit just a shot back at -5.  Tiger Woods is six out of the lead after a 74 yesterday, after which he basically bared his soul to Rich Lerner about his struggles off of the tee.  Steve Marino again lurks three back.  And, while I'm writing this, Geoff Ogilvy is making a spot for himself atop the leaderboard.  He's -7 in his round through 14 and sits on -5.

The key thing about all of these guys?  They don't hit the ball far, but they're accurate off of the tee.  That's what Muirfield Village requires.

In Illinois, the LPGA Tour's State Farm Classic features Suzann Pettersen and Se Ri Pak at the halfway mark lead on -10.  Five players are just a shot back and Angela Stanford is hanging at -7.  There was talk at the beginning of the week that Panther Creek would be playing tougher since it was lengthened.  It definitely hasn't.  In fact, the lowest winning score at Panther Creek of -18 may be challenged.

Meanwhile, rain has crushed the Wales Open.  The course was basically flooded this morning, but play has resumed at Celtic Manor.  Ross Fisher is tied with former amateur standout Richie Ramsey at -6 very early in the round.

Speaking of rain, they finally finished the first round on the Nationwide Tour near me in Prince George's County.  The weather is supposed to be nice here today, so they might get it in to be an official event.

And, on the Champions Tour, Bernhard Langer leads by a stroke after round one of the Triton Financial Classic in Austin, Texas.

LPGA scoring

I have to admit that I am baffled at the scores being tossed out there. In the top 85 after the second round, there were THREE rounds over par. Part of that makes me question the length they say they are playing. It is definitely longer than last year, but a lot of that length seems to have been put on dogleg holes – giving the player more room to get the ball over the trees at the corners – giving many of the players short irons into greens where they had mid and long irons last year. (to whichever moron who was in the host seat for round two – Michelle Wie did NOT hit a 300 yard 3-wood. She cut off 40-60 yards at the corner – her shot travelled 240-260 – not the 300 you play around the bend)

In any case – they are making shots and making putts – this has been fun to watch !

What a difference when the wind kicks up – only 30 players posted rounds under par. Eleven more shot even par 72’s. Which leaves 31 over par rounds. (yes, that includes “the most marketable player on the LPGA Tour” – whose overwhelming talent and personality dropped 5 shots in the last 4 holes. She really needs a few years away from the media to grow up – but will the media give her that time ? I know – don’t be ridiculous)

ENOUGH with Beth Daniels’ sniffing up Wie’s rectum. Shots of Wie at the practice green hiting a few chips. “If hard work is rewarded, she is going to play some very good golf.” Ok – so now we know that Michelle Wie is the only woman who practices and works at her game.

LOL – best line of the LPGA broadcast – Jane Crafter, talking about McPherson hitting her approach to the 18th and the high winds, “I think there’s a small craft advisory on the lake right now.”

The LPGA has a sponsor for first time winners ? The Rolex First Time Winner ?? That’s a pretty good name.

Ok – male announcers on LPGA broadcasts should be forbidden to discuss the fashions being worn. Terry Ginn figured out that Se Ri Pak’s shirt designs are different than they were a few years ago. oh REALLY ?

I pity the golf writer or broadcaster/announcer that gets on the

wrong side of both courtgolf and the one-eyed guy. We are brutal. But honest…
