Dottie Pepper and Beth Daniel Preview the LPGA Championship

This morning, two of the former LPGA players that will be broadcasting the LPGA Championship on Golf Channel next week were a part of a conference call to preview the event with the media.  (Somehow, I'm a part of the media.  It still shocks me.)  Former major champions Dottie Pepper and Beth Daniel took questions from some scribes about the event.

Pepper and Daniel both emphasized that this tournament has a special place on the schedule because it is the signature event of the LPGA Tour - much in the same sense of the PGA Tour's Players Championship.

Pepper mentioned that the event suffers some from the lack continuity in the Tour's schedule but that this event could really being to show if " somebody could really take a choke hold on this entire season over the next eight weeks."  With only 7 events - three of them majors - until the formation of the Solheim Cup team under Beth Daniel's guidance, the Captain expects " a lot is going to happen in those Solheim Cup points" beginning with the LPGA Championship.

As for favorites, Pepper and Daniel had a tough time in handicapping the field to a very short list of favorites.  Both, though, liked Brittany Lang as a darkhorse to win the event.  Daniel liked Cristie Kerr as her favorite, which Pepper echoed but noted that " Paula Creamer who feels like she's owed a major championship and a veteran at age 22, so I think you have to put her in there."

Regardless of who is on the leaderboard come Sunday, neither Daniel nor Pepper seem to believe that having an American at the top of the leaderboard - or as the face of the Tour - is essential for its growth.  Pepper noted that she didn't " think it could hurt to have an American up there, especially in the events that are so big."  In the last 34 LPGA majors played, only a paltry 7 have been won by American players.  Despite that, the Tour has grown significantly with Swede Annika Sorenstam as the face of the Tour - who Daniel noted could connect with American fans not just because she speaks Enlish, but is a "dynamic personality."

For Golf Channel's part, they're broadcasting all four rounds of the event in HD.  They'll feature Aimpoint on holes 16 (where I will marshall two days) and 18.  Christina Kim will be mic'd for sound and the leaders will be interviewed at the turn down the stretch.  But as for the use of Twitter during tournament play, Pepper called the notion "absurd."  That sentiment that was echoed by Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel on Twitter today.

Pepper added, " There are ways to use mediums like that to build a fan base, to keep up with what's hip right now, but I think it's absurd in a round of golf."

Of course, Waggle Room isn't playing in the LPGA Championship but will be at the event as well with posts, Tweets, video, and audio from Bulle Rock.

Twitter during an LPGA event

PTI did a segment on it today. Wilbon slammed it, like many others. Kornhiser said the LPGA is dying and needs to do something that will bring fans closer.

Mic’d Kristy Mac the other week and now Christina, great idea. Pettersen would be entertaining also, might need a tape delay for her.

Kornheiser also said competion alone can’t save the LPGA, I disagree. Your telling me a Wie and Creamer duel at Bulle Rock next week would not make strides in the right direction? Even Gulbis and Pressell or Lorena and C. Kim would be interesting.

ok – before the LPGA will “die” – PTI will be long off the air. Two idiots like Wilbon and Kornholer talking about things they neither care about or know anything about isn’t worth a golf fan’s time.

CG is right

The LPGA will out last PTI. Just as it has done the same for Pet rocks, cabbage patch dolls, Roy Firestone, Phil Donahue, and other passing fads.

The 2006 LPGA Championship

May have been the best show in golf over the last five years though hardly anyone remembers it. First-

Two Hall of Famers Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak go to playoff. Pak wins it by nearly holing out from 200 yards.

Sunday contenders included

Cristie Kerr
Michelle Wie
Annika Sorenstam

The tournament didn’t lack for tv coverage either. A Nationwide tour event was wiped out by rain and that enabled GC to broadcast all 18 holes on Sunday. Still if you ask the golf media about this tournament, you will get a shrug at best.

Lorena Ochoa began the final day tied with Pak but didn’t get it roling.

The supporting cast of contenders who seriously threatened to win it include-

Ai Miyazato
Pat Hurst
Mi Hyun Kim
Shi Hyun Ahn

When was the last time a major on any golf tour racked up a list of Hall of Famers contending(and winning) and such a strong supporting cast to boot.

I completely agree with you, Bill. That was one of my favorite LPGA events ever. It would be great to give a send off to Bulle Rock with the same kind of excitement!

Ok – the two “top” announcers can’t handicap the field – but they can pick a dark horse ????

Christina Kim will regret agreeing to have that mic on her hip. The gossip media might like it – but she is too free with her language to be on live. Xxx Golf Channel will have to delay her to make sure what she says is usable on the air. Kind of defeats the purpose. The other way this thing goes is that she thinks so much about her words that she isn’t concentrating on her play. Right now, she doesn’t need that – she’s trying to make the Solheim Cup team and needs to play her best.

I wonder about Paula Creamer believing that she is “owed” a major. I don’t know her enough to say that – but if it’s true, I’m not going to hold my breath on her winning a major anytime soon. If it’s not true, these two geniuses just made getting an interview with Creamer very difficult.

BUT ! Good for you, Dottie, on your take on Twittering. You may be the only one who thinks you’re funny – but when you have something decent to say, you way it well.

If no one in the broadcasting industry lives up to your standards, why don’t you stop watching? Or at least hit the mute button. Why do you torture yourself so?

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

Christina may be pretty colorful in what she says, but she doesn’t really cuss much from my interactions with her. She knows when the mic is on and recording and when it’s not. VERY smart.

I was a little perplexed by the thought on Creamer. I don’t know if she feels that way. I would expect that’s Dottie’s interpretation.

I hope you’re right – CK is a lot of fun – but she does have that “sailor” button. :-) Just hope she’s not thinking about words more than golf. Looks good to make the cut, but not to contend.

Definitely on Dottie – her interpretations do tend to miss the mark.

But, she isn’t afraid to say what she feels and people like me clamor for that kind of thing – unless you are wrong so often that you should just shut your yapper :)

Like Johnny Miller

The looks Dottie made after a Millerism during last year’s Women’s Open were priceless.

Yeah, which I give Dottie total credit for doing

I don’t clamor for much from an announcer – getting the story right is about all I ask of them – and with this bunch, there are just way too many mistakes.
