British Open Champion to Receive Title Belt; WWE Laments
Mike Aitken reported in the Scotsman yesterday that the Prestwick Club will be handing a championship belt to the winner of the 2010 Open Championship at St. Andrew's.
For only the second time since Young Tom Morris won three consecutive Opens between 1868 and 1870, an achievement which entitled him to take permanent possession of the championship belt, Prestwick golf club will present the winner of the Open in St Andrews in 2010 with a replica of the prized red morocco leather belt ornamented with silver.
While all the victors since Young Tom, who received a gold medal in 1872, have lifted the Claret Jug, Sandy Lyle was the fortunate recipient of a replica belt in 1985 at Royal St George's to mark the championship's 125th anniversary.
By way of noting next summer's 150th anniversary of the oldest major, Prestwick again intend to mark the occasion by gifting the champion golfer of 2010 with a replica.

Young Tom Morris with the Belt
It stuns me that the belt ceremony has only happened once since 1870. If the R&A put a replica Open Championship belt out for sale, they would sell like hot cakes. I really hope that they modernize the belt like World Wrestling Entertainment has with their title.
Can't you imagine Padraig Harrington just beaming upon receipt of a spinning Open Championship title belt? Maybe he would like a Scrolling Belt buckle that reads "2007, 2008, 2009 Open Champion?"
Ok, even if the R&A doesn't come out with a replica, spinning Open Championship belt for sale, at least come out with a replica Claret Jug. I would buy one of those in a heartbeat.

I like the idea. On my trip to Scotland, I snuck into the R&A building at St Andrews and got a quick look at the original belt. It may not have the bling of an Anthony Kim belt, but it is amazing to look at.

Fantastic Idea, And I Am Happy It Is Coming to Pass
This is an incredible gesture and nod to the rich history of the early game. Your idea of a modern belt is humorous (and I did laugh out loud) but at the same time, I am pleased that the plan seems to be a replica of the same belt Young Tom Morris retired in 1870.
All too often modern golf fans overlook the traditions and origins of our great game, and Prestwick is doing us all a favor by reminding us of the greats that played long before television and other modern conveniences were thought of.
I deeply suspect that one fellow Eldrick Woods, who knows and appreciates golf history will redouble his effort in order to add this prize to his burgeoning collection.

I think this is a great way to commemorate the 150th (!) Open. I do wish they would do it more often, though.

wholly unoriginal post biting off your headline, but any Ric Flair reference is a good Ric Flair reference.

I swear this is true...
I was thinking about Sergeant Slaughter on the way to work this morning. I really have no idea why, except maybe I was thinking of the upcoming G.I. Joe movie and thinking how cool it would be if he was in there, though, he’s probably not as cool now in his 60’s.
I really haven’t watched wrestling since I was a teenager or maybe into my 20’s, but it used to be awesome.
