Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

How Low Can Mike Weir Go at Bethpage?

Mike Weir is dominating Bethpage Black in his first round.  He is -6 right now with five holes to play.  Since he is in the second half of the Thursday afternoon side of the draw, he will be a part of the crew that attempts to begin the second round at 4:30pm ET (at least, that's what we're hearing right now).

Weir will finish he second round around 4:15 or 4:30, wait up to 90 minutes, and start again.  If he can keep fresh for those 90 minutes, then Weir will have an opportunity to continue pounding away at a weakened Bethpage Black.

That said, how low can Mike Weir go if he continues at this kind of torid pace?  Eight under?  Ten under?  Is that too crazy?

Weir is currently three clear of the trio of his nearest challengers at -3.  He is 10 shots ahead of defending champion Tiger Woods.  Ten shots - in the first round.

Tiger Woods said that he expected this part of the draw to have it equally as rough as his did because these players would get more mud on the ball as the course attempts to dry out from the rain on Thursday.

Unfortunately for him, that has not been the case at all.  In fact, Mike Davis said yesterday that the course drains very well despite the lack of drainage systems comparable to more modern US Open layouts, or Augusta National.  That drainage system worked well enough to keep mud off of the golf ball of these players.

At the same time, the greens are holding shots with a lower ball flight that it would normally reject.  This bodes well for shorter players, like Weir, that are hitting long irons and medalwoods into a number of greens.  The ball will stop quickly because the greens still are not dry enough to have much of a defense.

With the weather expected to be filled with precipitation tomorrow, Weir will likely never face a Bethpage Black at its mightiest.  That may allow Weir - or other players - to catch fire and never have to adjust their play to a dried out Bethpage.  Scoring could very well go low and into double digits by the weekend - if not before then.

Another great shot by Rocco at 18.

Flirted with the bunker on the right, but looks to have about eight feet for birdie.

Well, he missed the putt...

…but finishes with a 68. Hell of a round.

didn’t you love the ever pleasant Johnny Miller declaring that approach shot to be a “mistake” ?

One shot before, he declared it to be BRAVE to start a shot over the bunker and keep it to the right of the hole.

How about the stat of the week ? This is the reason stats need to be triple thought before even considering putting them out for public consumption…

If Weir makes a par or better, he will shoot 65 (or better) and will have THE LOWEST OPENING ROUND AT A US OPEN AT BETHPAGE BLACK. Gee Johnny, how many opening rounds have there been at Bethpage ? Oh yeah – ONE !!!!!! This is the second.

Weir makes the birdie – shoots 64.
