Graeme McDowell on His First Round at US Open

Graeme McDowell came into the media center after his first round of 69 (-1) was completed on Friday at Bethpage Black in the 109th US Open.  McDowell said that the course was playing pretty well considering the conditions yesterday and that his strong iron play in the last several months served him well in round one.

McDowell may well be at a huge advantage - as well as any player that was in the morning wave that attempted to go off yesterday morning.  They will not even attempt to play a part of the second round today.  The Thursday afternoon session will complete their first rounds and then be hustled out to the course for round two around 4pm ET.  The Thursday morning wave will not start their second round until 9am Saturday - at a minimum.  Given the forecast for Saturday, McDowell and those in his session may not see the course again until Sunday.

Here's a little video from his press conference - held while the media questioned Tiger Woods' +4 performance over two days and one round.

Given the weather forecast, I don’t see how this is an advantage for McDowell, or anybody in the Thursday morning group. The way this shapes out, it is very possible that the Thursday morning group will have to play in back to back days of bad weather with almost none of the excellent conditions the Thursday afternoon group is getting right now. The afternoon group could be playing in perfect weather all day today, then finish their second rounds before the bad weather rolls in again on Saturday.

Complete agreement, CG.

The guys playing right now (2:45 PM EDT) are enjoying the closest thing to ideal scoring conditions you’re likely to get at Bethpage Black. Perfect weather, soft greens.

I think that the Thursday morning draw is screwed right now. Unless the afternoon crew tires in their second round this afternoon, it is tough luck.

Tomorrow. The lady at one of the checkpoints who told me “Nice pants” yesterday asked where they were today. I told her that I’d have a pair for her tomorrow!
