Aussies Hull and Wright Playing Well at Bulle Rock

Bulle Rock is not playing nearly as easy as it did yesterday about halfway through the day.  The weather today is a lot warmer than it was yesterday.  Without any additional significant rainfall, the course has had a chance to dry out to some extent.

Don't get me wrong - Bulle Rock is still about as firm as a past-ripe banana.  But, the course appears to have a bit more bite today.

The Constructivist's pick of Na Yeon Choi is looking smarter by the minute since she is now just a shot out of the lead of Anna Nordqvist.

Lindsey Wright and Katherine Hull sit in second position also.  Out of the morning half of the field, they appeared the most composed and confident outside of Lorena Ochoa, who posted a very solid 69 of her own in the morning session.

I just got out of the media room and spoke quickly with Lindsey Wright.  As I mentioned earlier, she was the only player in the morning to challenge the left hand side with driver.  She said that she felt really good with the driver all day and decided to stick with it.  Wright noted that she feels the stretch of 14 through 17 is all birdie holes.  Of course, those are preceded by 11, 12, and 13 which are really the toughest stretch on the course.  If she can maintain her play into the weekend, seems like she would expect to finish very strong - critical in a major championship.

Hull may have learned a critical lesson from her success toward the end of last season and early on this year in Australia.  She said that she "expected to win early" this season on Tour and that caused her to pressure herself.  But, that experience may have helped her prepare for now because "it wasn't until Michelob, Sybase, [and] Corning that [she] realized it."  Perhaps a a case of great timing.

Check out my photos from the 16th hole this morning!

AND – both ladies are graduates of Pepperdine University.

Course has more bite today than yesterday because they aren’t playing lift, clean, and place. Seeing a good bit of mud on some balls.

Hull mentioned that in her presser after the round and said, “It’s nothing to really affect the ball flight.”

Wright was happy to mention both commonalities between her and Hull – Australian and Pepperdiners.

Well, it probably didn’t get her too much. A little mud isn’t too bad. Ochoa said she had mud on her ball for most of the holes and she shot 69. Can’t be that bad, right?

depends on how much – a mud stain doesn’t do much, but I saw a number of dirt clods stuck to balls.

good god – less than 2 minutes into the PGA Tour broadcast and Kelly Tilghman already has my brain hurting – let me check to see if my ears are bleeding.

best mud ball story – Phil Mickelson back in his college days at Arizona State – gets a gob of mud on his ball and asks his opponent if he can clean it off. The other guy says no – which ticks Phil off. Mickelson proceeds to pull a 7 iron, inspects the ball for a clean spot, and holes out the shot. The other guy’s coach asks what happened – and, hearing the story, tells his guy “when Phil Mickelson asks if he can clean his ball, the answer is YES !”
