Fantasy Crystal Ball: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial

Be sure to check out the Waggle Room Fantasy Golf sponsors, 14stix.com and GolfStakes.com!  (I've been wearing my shirt and you should be, too!)

This week, the Texas Swing enters the Ben Hogan tribute part of the Tour with the playing of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.  It's a World War II era event that I think will benefit from being reunited with its Dallas-Fort Worth neighbor, the Nelson.  The history of the event is fascinating.  Sal Johnson offers some great perspective, as well as James Dobson's Hogan biobook, "An American Life."

Phil Mickelson is not there for obvious reasons and we wish all the best to the Mickelson family.

Rory Sabbatini is the winner of last week's Byron Nelson Championship and a former champion of this Colonial event.  For those reasons combined, you would be a fool to not insert him into your lineup this week.  He would become the first player since Hogan himself in 1946 to win both events in the same season.  Then again, I'm a RORRIER (saying it til it sticks) so just ignore me.

Even if you aren't a Rory fanboy or girl, you still have a field with 12 of the top 25 in the world in it.

Colonial is an old course with tree lined fairways and small-ish greens.  This is a ballstriker's golf course.  Players will have to negotiate the doglegs all over the course to survive.

Someone like Kenny Perry can do that.  Drives the ball straight and just murders those irons.  He could make this a good week to come back into prominence after the Masters.

I like Geoff Ogilvy this week - or any week for that matter.  He is a thinking man's player and this is a thinking man's course.  He may not have played all that well lately, but you can't doubt him.

I know you're sick of reading it, but go ahead and pick Steve Marino.  Another top 20 last week at Las Colinas and he averages a 17th place finish here in 2 starts.

If you want to ride the wave of hot players, pick Brian Davis and Paul Casey for two completely different reasons.  Davis is consistent, but not amazing.  He's not even in the Waggle Room Top 20 despite scoring a lot of points this year.

Casey has been amazing.  Based upon his answer to my question to him on Twitter, I know he feels winning in America more is critical to validating his career.  He'll look to take a step closer to the second ranking in the world.

Good luck this week!

This is one of my favorite tournaments – such a great course. I like watching these guys make shots moving the ball in both directions, plus high and low however the wind blows. (and it’s one of the few I get to kid our Tiger-happy radio host about Tiger being a wuss by not playing) :-)

Ryan, can you imagine how much crap

court would give Tiger if he played Colonial and bested Hogan’s career four round score by 12-15 strokes.

By everyone’s admission, some of the luster had fallen from this event. Given the field and it’s position in the schedule, it should again be one of the top 3-4 non-major events on tour. Great course, great state, great Scott…

Court, am I not seeing you on Twitter? You would be ideal for that venue…

LOL – now why would I give Tiger crap for shooting four great rounds ? He’s the one who didn’t have very good results at Colonial – said it didn’t fit his eye.

This tournament drew all the top names while Ben Hogan was alive. Hogan and Butch Harmon, and Harmon’s father were all close, so it’s a good bet that Tiger got to know Hogan as well. He played Colonial as long as Hogan was alive out of respect, in my opinion. The Nelson was the same. Right now, the two “respect” tournaments are Nicklaus’ Memorial and Palmer’s Bay Hill.

I think my name is on Twitter, but I have yet to Tweet.
