The '09 Masters Final Round on Google Maps
As you know, I'm a fan of programming and using new technologies to display golf information. Lately, I've been working with a data visualization tool called Many Eyes that I've gotten great feedback about from those of you that love stats. I'm going to keep working with Many Eyes to generate new and interesting ways to see golf information.
But, I'm also just beginning to work with Google Maps. Yeah, I know, they've been around a while but they haven't really been used to tell golf stories. They're great for seeing where courses are, getting directions to them, and - if you're a real nerd - greating GPS maps of golf courses.
What I decided to do, though, was make a foray into Google Maps by showing how a golf round evolves on the map. For my first map, I plotted the final round pairing of Kenny Perry and Angel Cabrera from the Masters.
Click the picture to see the map!
If you click on each of the markers, you'll see what hole you're looking at and their score after that hole. You can really see how they move over the land and what they did as they made their way around the National.
I want feedback, though. What would be cool to see in addition to this?
- Maybe plotting tee shots? I can create lines that create overhead views.
- Maybe some pictures of each hole of action as it happened? I can definitely do that with pictures.
I think this could be a really fun technology to mess with, but just getting started with it.

Interesting
Can you tie it in with additional user generated content like images from flickr?

That’s my next step. I’m trying to see if I can embed videos in the infoboxes. I’m pretty sure I can do photos.
