Happy National Golf Day!
Sure, you may think that today is just May 13th. But, my friend, you are dead wrong.
IT'S NATIONAL GOLF DAY TODAY!
via www.dog-birthday-parties.com (Yup, that's right.)
Screw you, Mother's Day. What a waste, Arbor Day! It's National Golf Day. This is the one day per year in which you can openly celebrate your affliction for the game of golf. Go ahead, skip out on work and hit the links. Maybe work extra hard on setting your Waggle Room Fantasy Golf team for this week. Perhaps bust out the putter in the office and have a little contest with your co-workers. On National Golf Day, anything is possible.
In the spirit of the holiday, golf industry officials are in Washington, DC, today to meet with lawmakers and representatives about recent slights to the game. They'll be sharing these numbers about the impact that the game has on the national economy.
From Tony Dear in the Seattle Examiner:
- 28.7million golfers in the US
- two million people employed in the golf industry earning a total of $61billion in wages
- $3.5billion raised for charity every year by way of almost 150,000 charitable tournaments
- almost 50% of all courses increasing their unmaintained areas by ten acres or more in the last ten years
- $4.4million in scholarships awarded to over 2,400 students by the First Tee
Golf has a big impact on our economy and it is for the better. Even if you don't care about the impact golf has on the economy, you probably like golf. So, that in mind, check out this petition that is being circulated around the Interweb and put your digital John Hancock on it to show lawmakers how much us golfers love our game. I did.

Re: Nat'l Golf Day
Ryan -
Great to see you and other golf enthusiasts perpetuating the positive messages surrounding the support. I read Tony’s article this morning and thought it was a solid read, and likewise a good addition to this particular post. Thanks for including the petition.
Moving forward, what are some good ways we can get the more casual golf fans to care about these initiatives?

Haha, I didn’t mean that literally. I love my mom and she deserves a holiday.
Ryan, to your question, I’m not certain how to get more casual golfers interested other than to make very clear the impact of NOT supporting these initiatives on the average golfer. If it doesn’t impact them, then they don’t care much. If it does, they’ll certainly protect themselves and the game.

National Golf Day
Ryan, (and the other Ryan..) – I was one of those who walked all over the Hill yesterday and tried to carry the message to our legislators. BUT the real issue is, of course, getting this message to EVERYONE, not just the people in office. I tried to cover this briefly on my blog… shameless plug… (and if anyone is interested in what the Friday Morning Irregulars are – contact me! It is early morning nine hole $15 charity golf! Bingo, Bango, Bongo – exclusively! and a lot of fun) here is my blog address: http://charliebirney.wordpress.com

Charlie, thanks for stopping by! I hope you’ll keep on coming back. This is definitely a message that has to get out to anyone who has some kind of stake in the success of the sport.
And, since your FMI game is in the area, I think I could be coaxed into playing for $15 :)

Friday Morning Irregulars
Ryan, this is an open thing. You show up, give me $15 and we play “Bingo, Bango, Bongo!!” all the cash goes to charity.
If you let me know I can put you on the email list. I send out irregular emails with updates on what course we are playing and, yes, a link to my blog… of course!
Let me know and I will put you on the list! We are trying to build it, but it is so early many folks won’t come on out. BUT the weather is perfect then, no one is on the course, and it is PERFECT. Come on out! Thanks for this great website!
