Cristie Kerr Gets It Done Again at Kingsmill
While the Players Championship turned out to be rather anti-climactic thanks to the brilliance of Henrik Stenson, the LPGA Tour had a really exciting finale to the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill.
After Lorena Ochoa got out of the gate in dominating fashion, she plummeted on the weekend back to the field on Saturday. This opened the door for a leaderboard that was stacked with talent. That led to a Sunday finish that was pretty remarkable.
Golfgirl captures the moment well. (She should. She works with Cristie Kerr. Can you say connected?)
Then, at the 15th hole, after being locked in a tenuous four-way tie for much of the final round, Cristie had to do... what she had to do. And it was something she hadn't done in the first three rounds: she had to go for the green... with her three wood, from the fairway of that par-5 hole. Her ball landed on the green and rolled to the fringe. Then with a two-putt for birdie she took the lead.
Brittany Lang
Kerr didn't look back. As the Constructivist notes in his detailed recap, she made pars all the way to the house and wound up winning the tournament by two shots. She is the first two time winner of the LPGA event on this course. Hound Dog notes that Kerr has played in every LPGA Tour even this season and has finished in the top 10 in six of those eight events. And, as has been pointed out elsewhere before, Kerr actually extends her hold over the title "American LPGA player with the most wins in the 2000s" with 12 wins.
In case you were thinking that player is Paula Creamer, you'd be wrong. But, she did wind up finished tied for 2nd at the JLPGA's Salonpas Cup.
Other notables include Natalie Gulbis posting a top 10 along with Lorena Ochoa. Michelle Wie finished T15. Juli Inkster can still get it done and had a T11. My girl Brittany Lang was T39. (I will keep mentioning her until she is on the podcast.)

It’s too bad that two big tournaments are played on the same weekend. The LPGA ends up with as much attention as Mich Ultra has flavor.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
ZING! Funny story actually…
I was at the LPGA Championship about 5 years ago when it was still at DuPont. I went there in the morning to the press tent. In the tent, they had McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches…and Michelob Ultra on tap. Being 21 at the time, you had better believe I had a sausage & egg biscuit with a few brews for breakfast.

Not as bad
As when the Players was the same weekend as the Kraft Nabisco and the ‘faux’ major was the one getting all the media rather than the real one. The Players’ Championship- Golf’s most overrated tournament.
