David Feherty, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden are in an Elevator...
CBS Sports golf analyst David Feherty has gotten himself into some hot water for a written piece in D Magazine. Based in Dallas, Feherty was quoted in a feature that asked five residents to talk about their feelings on former President George W. Bush moving to Dallas.
In what he labeled a "metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president," Feherty wrote this:
"From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this though," Feherty wrote toward the end of his column. "Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."
I don't much care for Sen. Reid or Speaker Pelosi. I hope that Osama bin Laden dies at the nearest possible opportunity. And I have a really dry sense of humor that often tries to tell a joke with hyperbole. So, I get where David is coming from with this. But, I also know that writing this kind of stuff will get me in deep with people on any side of the aisle. And that's why Feherty is in trouble.
This is not Europe. In Britain, worse things are said on the floor of the House of Commons. (Watch it late at night on C-SPAN2 sometime.)
Feherty is also not a politician, policy analyst, or the ever amorphous job description of "political pundit." Illinois Senator Dick Durbin compared our troops to the Nazis, but it seems like the private citizen is in more trouble here.
David Feherty is a golf analyst, or at least that is how people know him. But people who jump in this discussion probably do not know that he has spent significant time in Iraq in support of our troops. (For the record, so has Kelly Tilghman.) Jay Busbee had an interview with David earlier this year after a recent visit to Iraq. In the interview, David - again speaking his mind - makes it clear that he loves the US of A and doesn't care much for politicians.
I've lived so many other places, and it's given me some perspective. The average American wouldn't believe how extraordinary we have it here. Every day I wake up, I think, "Am I still in America? Yes? Thank f---!"
That's flag-waving patriotism. At the same time, he is awfully scornful of our political leaders.
We've got the smartest people in the world over there, and they get progressively dumber the closer you get to Washington.
Ask 100 Americans if that statement is true or not, and I would wager that at least 70 believe it to be true.
Look, David should not have made printed remarks that are tantamount to a description of murdering the third person in our Presidental line of succession...and Harry Reid and one of the world's most reviled people.
The conservative movement will use as their retort that this joke could have been made a lot of times in the last 8 years if you replaced Pelosi and Reid with President Bush and Vice President Cheney in that elevator. And that people would have laughed. They're right. Still, the joke isn't justified in this country regardless of which political figures are in the elevator.
I like David Feherty on CBS TV. I think he is quick witted and funny when he is not kissing up to Tiger Woods. I hope, though, that this incident doesn't cost him (a) his job or (b) his willingness to say what he thinks. Just be a little more careful about it next time.

This is a VERY old joke – and maybe Feherty chose a bad time to tell his version of it.
This is political speech that is PROTECTED BY THE FIRST AMENDMENT !!!!!!!!! Insensitive – yes – but protected. The fist amendment has been bastardized in a thousand different ways since the 1960’s – but these kinds of outrages in the media are always one sided. If a liberal says it about a conservative – that’s fine – but reverse things and this is the kind of reaction you get.
BUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I want to know is this – where was all this outcry and horror when the same joke was told during the Bush administration BY the media and entertainment circles with the PRESIDENT receiving the two bullets ?
Do you need any more evidence that the media is slanted to the left ?
And yes – Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are two of the most dispicable people in Washington. They get rich owning stock in companies owned by people in the Bush administration until it becomse uncool – then they take their money and scream against the evil businessman.

I don’t think anyone is debating that Feherty can say what he wants. This isn’t hate speech, so it is protected. He can still lose his job over it, though. This is way worse than “body bags” and “bikini wax” at Augusta.
At the same time, I think that if these were two Pubs in the elevator, it would go over differently with many. That’s a personal bias people have. For me, if it’s wrong, it’s wrong.

Like CG said above...
…this is a tired old joke that has been told in any number of permutations for God only knows how many years. Why Feherty thought it’d be funny this time is anyone’s guess.
I say this as a staunch Democrat who has little use for Pelosi and Reid.
I hope Feherty keeps his job. He’s great at what he does for a living; his on-course analysis is simultaneously humorous and educational. Best case scenario now is that CBS slaps him on the had and requires him to do a brief on-air apology and that’ll be that.

The WHY is pretty simple – Pelosi and Reid are doing everything they can to emasculate the military – with the blessing of Dear Leader Obama.
Luckily for CBS, they technically don’t have to deal with it since it was in an article in Texas – not on TV. But, seeing the ownership of CBS, some sort of reprimand will be coming. (not the “please don’t do that again” while snickering under their breath after he said Richard S “Little Dick” Johnson on the air.

Beyond my saying...
…that I disagree with your initial statement, I’ll only say that i don’t talk politics in bars or on sports blogs.
As for the second paragraph – I’m not familiar with that incident, but it sounds hysterical. Feherty cracks me up.

it was HILARIOUS ! You could almost feel Nance asking himself “did he really just say that ?” and Faldo biting his tongue so he wouldn’t lose it and fall off his chair laughing.

These situations make me cringe
Clearly, statements like that are intended to be figurative. There can’t be a person in the country that believes that Feherty himself believes that Reid or Pelosi should be shot or strangled. Why can’t we just accept the statement for it is: hyperbole intended to illustrate the point that Feherty believes many soldiers are not fans of those two? Does it even need to go any further?
Can’t we all get past the “<insert serious topic here> is so serious that we can’t joke about it” mindset and just take a step back and acknowledge that no (potential) harm was ever endorsed by anyone? When we’re not allowed to use hyperbole and metaphor and simile and other literary devices anymore to convey our feelings, the world will become a truly boring place. And when I say “allowed”, sure, there’s no violation of the First Amendment, but what happens in these situations when jobs are lost and apologies are demanded is, it becomes a de facto limit on free speech. We’re telling someone, "you’re not allowed to speak your mind because what you say might be considered “insensitive”. We might as well just make it illegal if we’re going to discourage people from speaking their minds.
This situation “looks bad” because too many people in this country sit around trying to figure out how to be offended. Then, when someone fires something “insensitive” off the cuff, a mountain is made from a molehill.

depends on which side of the aisle you’re sitting on. when this joke was made with George Bush as the one getting shot, the media thought it was hilarious – but when it’s Pelosi and Reid….
we don’t have an objective, neutral media anymore.

Yeah, but...
…that’s a separate issue, to me. I agree with you completely, but we should be able to see through the smoke screen. Let the partisans hem and haw about it. But, there are tons of situations just like it that have a PC spin, not necessarily a political one.

feherty
What a case of mad cow hoof-in-mouth disease! Doesn’t this guy need his paycheck? These British golf broadcasters (remember Ben What’shisname?) love getting themselves sacked over senseless comments.

Yep, that’s the guy, and I think that he should be calling Feherty right about now to discuss damage control.

He definitely didn’t handle this the right way.
