CBS Kraft Nabisco Coverage - Vague and Confusing
CBS Sports doesn't do a lot of LPGA Tour broadcasts - perhaps a handful of tournaments per year. The tournament that is broadcast has to buy time and crew from CBS to produce and broadcast the event. The Kraft Nabisco Championship is one of the events that does just that. They buy time so that CBS Sports will broadcast the Sunday back nine on their air.
For the final thirty minutes alone, I'm very glad that the KNC continues this practice. To that end, I'm sure that CBS Sports is happy as well. The end of the tournament was as spectacular as you will see anywhere and, perhaps, the best ever in the history of this event. (There are arguments for other recent finishes, including Aree Song and Karrie Webb's final shots.)
Still, the coverage that we got from CBS at Mission Hills was kind of scattered.
I love Verne Lundquist. If I hired someone to do play by play of my life, he would be in the top three - along with Gus Johnson ("HA, HA! Ryan just made a per-fect cup of coffee!") and Kevan Harlan ("Ryan with NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE in that blog post!").
With those images in your head, we'll explain more after the jump.
The rest of the booth left a lot to be desired, though. Beth Daniel is still figuring it out in there. Billy Kratzert doesn't cover this tour and he could not get a yardage & club combo to save his life. Doesn't the LPGA Tour have some kind of tie in with SkyCaddie?!
Bradley Klein of Golfweek points out the problem:
We saw 20 drives struck on Sunday, but not once did anyone say how far it was to this bunker or that dogleg, and even after we saw a fleeting reference to Lincicome averaging 270 yards driving distance on the LPGA, there was no effort to quantify the advantage this gave her.
We saw 31 iron shots/full wedge approaches to greens on par-4s and par-5s Sunday. By my count, we got the yardage 18 times and the club only 14 times.
Of 158 shots telecast Sunday, 79 (exactly half) were putts, and yet we were told the distance on only five of them. OK, we’ll excuse the 21 tap-ins.
Doing the math, that means that we got 59 iron shots and 28 of them were par 3 tee shots. The overall pacing is good, but with so little information on these shots, it is the equivalent of watching me blindly hit to driving range targets.
Meanwhile, on NBC Sports, there is a mic on the caddie to tell me what the guy had for lunch at the turn. C'mon!
Also, the camera work was kind of bizarre. At one point, a cameraman seemed to close to Kristy McPherson that she might strike him with her backswing. Over at 18, they were using that crane cam like they were trying to auction it on eBay. Look! It follows the ball to the green!
I'm sure that the Kraft Nabisco didn't pay for the Deluxe Wash with CBS Sports, but it certainly behooves everyone involved to give this telecast the top notched, detailed coverage that it deserves.

Ryan,
We got the CBS flunkie crew this last weekend for the most part. Kind of, but Lundquist is not really a good host but could have been worse, Harpo Marx Bobby Clampett could have been doing it. The A team is getting ready for the Masters all the way across the country.

last year
At last year’s KNC, Lundquist call Suzann Pettersen, “Susan Peterson” repeatedly. Someone must have set him straight because I didn’t notice any gross misses on player names this time.
My only complaint about the coverage is there were tornado sightings in my local area. From Kristy’s tee shot until a replay of Brittany’s winning putt we were treated to the channel 12 weather guy giving a meteorology lesson. I eventually saw a replay of her second shot, but I have no idea what Christie/Kristy did.

Do they HAVE an A-Team for women’s golf ? I love Verne Lundquist, but he is saying more and more dumb things the older he gets – and he definitely didn’t have a crew around him to cover.
These networks have a hard enough time fielding a decent team for PGA Tour events.

Johnny Miller and Dottie Pepper
worked the US Open last year. I got the impression there were more than a few occasions when Dottie had to restrain herself from clobbering Johnny or at least give him a tongue lashing for saying something idiotic

Dottie Pepper chasing after Johnnie Miller with an 8-iron...
…would be must-see TV of the highest caliber. Hell – I’d spring for the Pay-Per-View on that one!

I’d buy that on pay-per-view

I understand the LPGA's desire...
…to have the final round telecast by a major network, but it seemed to me that ESPN’s coverage of the earlier rounds was superior to that offered by CBS on Sunday. Granted, that’s not saying much, but still…

This Golf Channel deal for next year seemingly looks better by the day.

agreed
I think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised by how much better the overall coverage will be when the same bunch is producing it week-in and week-out. I don’t care if he says “Susan Peterson” or “Carrie Webb” or not, Verne Lundquist can call any LPGA event he wants as far as I’m concerned.
I also couldn’t agree more with Bill’s comment about Bobby Clampett. I wonder which PGA player he would have compared Lincicome with…

Laura Davies
Brittany carried the sign at an LPGA event for a group that had Laura Davies in it. Good naturedly, Laura refers to Brittany as ‘sign girl’.

Indeed.
Especially seeing as how the Golf Channel’s reach seems to be consistently expanding. It has been included in the last few “expanded basic” cable packages I’ve partaken of, and since I switched to HD (about two years ago) the Golf Channel was included as part of the basic HD package, not requiring the addition of a “sports tier”.
It will be interesting to see if the Golf Channel’s overall viewership increases in the wake of The Haney Project.

xxx Golf Channel
consistency aside – I don’t see their coverage as superior. Any more time having to listen to Dottie Pepper laugh at herself, or Val Skinner asking silly, inane questions, or Brian Hammon babbling….. Kay Cockerill’ giggling is just annoying, Donna Caponi can’t see past her nose anymore. Beth “I mean” Daniel’s voice just sends shivers up my spine – I’ve heard her speak in person – where the heck did this half swallowed fake man voice come from ? Are they going to put Kelly Tilghman in the booth next year to finish it off ? Tom Abbot was hired as an accent – he adds nothing. ENOUGH already with the “like, y’know” and “I mean” and “totally” – SPEAK ENGLISH and get your facts and play-by-play coverage right.
I was ready to throw a golf ball through the TV listening to Dottie Pepper excuse every missed putt as the “Indio Affect.” Yes, Dottie, these ladies are just too stupid to figure out where Indio is…and the tournament has only been played on this course since 1972. Did they just build Indio last month to fool the golfers ?

When I say the coverage will improve because of the same production crew, I’m speaking less about the commentators than I am about other aspects of the production (like direction or variety of camera angles). I’m sure the commentators will be from the same pool we’re used to seeing so if you hate them now, you won’t think any better of them then.

There is only one camera shot that sets the PGA Tour above any other coverage – the blimp. I kind of doubt xxx Golf Channel is going to invest in a blimp with that high priced camera.

what a shame
It’s a real shame that no one will ever be able to live up to your expectations, CG. Life must be a real bitch for you.

As much as I hate these pre-rehearsed comments – that “No regard for human life” call still cracks me up !
