Loose Lips Sink Ships - The PGA Tour Players Survey is Out

Each year, SI/golf.com conducts a survey of PGA Tour players and it usually reveals some interesting results.  Last year, we found out that a lot of guys want Kelly Tilghman removed from the booth among other things.  This year, we get some likewise revealing sentiment on Tour.

Star-divide

For all of you fellow golf media still wondering if Tiger will get to 18 majors, the PGA Tour players seem to think that's a silly question.

Tiger Woods has won 14 majors. Will he break Jack Nicklaus's record of 18?

100% Yes | 0% No

Loose Lips: Unless he loses the other leg

Or maybe you're wondering if Phil is really the 2nd best player on Tour.

Who is the second-best player in golf?

72% Phil Mickelson | 12% Sergio Garcia | 6% Padraig Harrington

There was a lot of talk at the beginning of the year about PGA Tour players taking partial memberships on the European Tour in order to qualify for the Race to Dubai and Dubai World Championship.  Seems like a lot of players would not be willing to make a full-time switch to that circuit.  (Unlike the pronouncements of NBA players about going to European clubs.)

If the purses on the European tour were 50% more than those on the PGA Tour and you were granted an exemption, would you play over there?

Yes 26% | No 74%

Then again, the PGA Tour guys don't seem to be numbers guys.

How many FedEx Cup points do you get for a PGA Tour win?

500 (Correct Answer)  54% | Other 46%

Finally, it does not appear that PGA Tour players have much sympathy for sponsor woes.  And HQ had better hope that these numbers don't come up in sponsor negotiation sessions.

In light of the bad economy, should the Tour help sponsors by lowering purses?

No 55% | Yes 45%

A guy has to make a buck.  I wouldn't voluntarily take a pay cut at my job.  So, this one is more telling.

Because of commissioner Tim Finchem's request, have you added more tournaments to your schedule this year?

Yes 32% | No 68%

This kind of flies in the face of Stewart Cink's comment that the one in four rule may be gaining some traction among PGA Tour players.

There were a few questions that were pretty dumb (the 2nd best player question pops right out at you) but there were some very good ones this year. Nice to see that the players still have some respect for Sergio and definitely Tim Clark.

I was a little surprised that Steve Marino’s squeeze – the blond on PGATour.com doing the little highlights video each day – didn’t get a mention – and neither did Mrs Mickelson.

No surprise that most didn’t add any tournaments in response to Finchem’s request. No huge surprise that the players wouldn’t go play the Euro Tour if they added 50% to their purses.

A nice semi-surprise that so many of the guys agreed that the Tour should lighten the load on sponsors and lower tournament fees. (I knew some of those guys were listening to me) :-D

I was surprised that it was as split as it was. I thought it was going to swing wildly in favor of one position or another. What would be REALLY interesting is who responded what and order it by their place on the money list.

maybe not WHO voted – maybe just break down the 150 or so guys who had votes in the survey into 5 or 6 groups by position on the money list.

Kelly T

Please get rid of Kelly Tilghman. They should take her in the back and lynch her. Nothing is worse on television than trying to be funny or witty when you have zero talent in that area.

wait – wouldn’t that upset Kelly Lynch ? ;-)

(ok ok – so it was a reach – Kelly Lynch – co-star in “Road House” – Patrick Swayze’s love interest “Doc”….)

I agree with you on the live broadcasts – but I always liked her as anchor for Golf Central

Out all together is my vote!

Interestingly enough – that 12% of the people surveyed equals 8.64 people thought he was the second best player. Sounds like the guys at SI have been doing the stats again. :-)
