Should We Kill Off the Pro-Am Tournament?

Last weekend, the Champions Tour had one of their few pro-am tournaments each year with the playing of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am at TPC Tampa.  That was the tournament where Bill Murray struck a woman with an errant shot and she had to go to the hospital because of it.

21542_bill-murray-wears-an-interesting-hat-for-the-pebble-beach-golf-tourney_medium

(Pay attention out there!  At least get hit by Phil Mickelson.  He'll give you a signed glove and a couple hundred bucks.)

So, I guess the incident set off some writer for Sports Network.  And, of course, that means that we should kill off every pro-am tournament.

We'll call it a T.E.E. Party. The Total Elimination of Entertainers from professional golf tournaments. This new movement of ours will involve picket signs, slogans, phone calls to congressmen, op-ed pieces, sponsorship by golf pundits, original protest songs, a couple of well-paid lobbyists and, of course, portable toilets. It deserves our best effort.

Groan.  It's not bad enough already that some of the people at the tax day tea parties were an embarrassment to this country, but now we're going to use this in a golf column?  I'll chalk it up to me being tired.

The interesting thing is that the columnist is a Bill Murray fan, but is tired of Murray's golf course schtick.  Here is his (or her?) ultimate conclusion.

There's just simply no compelling reason, no justification, for having these men and women play in actual rounds with actual professional golfers anymore -- and certainly not during a final round like what occurred Sunday on the Champions Tour.

For as awful as the tea party reference was, the columnist may have a point.  Tiger Woods doesn't play in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am because the rounds are so long (and he hates Poppy Hills).  Not to say that tournament format policies should revolve around Tiger's interests alone, but it is an example.  At the same time, though, pro-ams can bring more people to the gate than otherwise might come.

Being torn on the issue, what is your thought on the paltry handful of pro-ams that we see each year on the PGA Tour umbrella o' tours?

I’m guessing that this was written at least partly tongue in cheek – and definitely not by a golf writer. No matter what happens in this country, there is always some weepy “save the world from the humans” type running around trying to protect us from ourselves.

He's half right re: Pro Ams

The original article you reference has a seed of a good idea, but takes it too far. Do away with it altogether? Stupid. Also, the main reason for having celebs in these types of highly publicized pro ams? Entertainment. And sorry, while the ‘purists’ may view the game as simply entertaining enough, that just limits their audience.

That said, pros also have a choice of NOT participating (a la tiger) and yet I could get behind leaving the Bill Murray’s of the world out of final rounds.

I think we just need a ‘new’ Bill Murray more than anything.

I think that last point is particularly dead on. We just need someone who’s cool for the 2000s. Maybe its Timberlake?

by Ryan Ballengee on Apr 23, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Timberlake is cool ? Maybe to 13 year old girls.

Murray is getting up in years and won’t be up to this forever, but everybody at a golf tournament will always know who he is – “Caddyshack” is a classic that just about everybody who is around the game has seen. Justin Timberlake is a name little girls know and not everybody likes his music because it is aimed at little girls.

Bill Murray thumped a little old lady – ok – it happens. Gerald Ford hit people on a regular basis. You going to tell the president he can’t play in a pro-am ?

The worst cracks to the noggins of a person in a gallery came from the pros. Remember the guy at The Tour Championship (presented by Coca Cola) last Fall ? HUGE bleeding knot on some poor guy’s head. He wasn’t hit by an entertainer.

You buys your ticket and you takes your chances. People get thumped at golf touranments.

Let me just go on record as saying that Timberlake is pretty cool among guys my age. He’s with Jessica Biel. That makes him cool.

Then again...

…it’s not Timberlake you and your buds like – it’s Biel…and it’s not her name on the tournament…it’s his…and his music still sucks. It’s on the iPod because the women like it. :-D

(I AM just kidding – I may not like his music, but every time I see him in a non-Hollywood type setting, he does seem like a good guy)

I can respect why someone might not like his music. Really, it’s “Dick in a Box” from Saturday Night Live that made him a legend. Check it out on YouTube.

I’ve seen it – completely crass and tasteless – and funny as hell. (and also a new low for SNL)

you two secretly love each other

You two are something else. I been reading both of you for a week now and I believe there is a man crush here.

(no word on whether Jessica Biel will be there or not – she has the hots for RB, but doesn’t want to break Timberlake’s heart)

Bill Murray

Bill Murray is over the top and no longer funny on the golf course. Timberlake is a good guy and is the new Bing Crosby and hopefully he will record some songs that we all will like.

…what ? and ruin that multi-million dollar market he has going ?? :-)

This country never ceases to amaze me with how

quick we are to want to do something after a freak accident.

Leave it the way it is….it’s fine

How about more of them?

Let’s bring back the 1980 PGA season and update it for a new age.

Andy Williams = Neil Diamond San Diego Pro-Am
Joe Garagiola = Johnny Bench Tucson Open
Jackie Gleason = Adam Sandler Pro-Am Classic
Glen Campbell = Regis Philbin Los Angeles Pro-Am
Danny Thomas = Nathan Lane Memphis Pro-Am
Bing Crosby = Bobby Vinton Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Sammy Davis, Jr. = Jamie Foxx Greater Hartford Open

:-)

I know Johnny Bench plays golf, but the rest ?

The thing about all those great names from the left side of the list is that they were all universally known and loved. EVERYbody knew who they were and enjoyed their work. It’s so hard to find people that are universally known and liked anymore.

(would they sing “Sweet Caroline” before the rounds on Thursday or after they finish on Sunday ?) :-D

The idea of the celebrity clambake is resigned to history.

It always seemed less corporate and more of a grand gathering of people who wanted to watch a couple of good guys play golf at their local club, grab a beer, and tell tall tales afterward. A bit less business-like than now. I’m still a bit unhappy that the LPGA dropped Dinah Shore’s name.

They should definitely sing it after the finish on Sunday.

I do agree that it’s a little too corporate feeling now – kind of forced. But, I also think that there are a number of celebs out there that are interesting and could help the game grow a bit. George Lopez? Probably not.
