Remembering Harry Kalas
Harry Kalas, long time voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, passed away this afternoon in the broadcast booth at Nationals Park during his preparation for today's ballgame. He was 73.
Kalas was one of my favorite broadcasters ever. His deep and unique voice was incredibly soothing. I have a lousy MP3 of the opening theme to This Week in Baseball because it has Harry's call of Jack Schmidt's 500th home run. From everything I have ever heard about the man, he was so pleasant and caring.
He loved baseball and broadcasting. Fortunately, he was able to experience the best of both worlds when the Phillies captured their first World Series titles in 28 years last October.
Kalas was also the voice of NFL Films, one of the institutions that helped me to fall in love with football and broadcasting. He was one of only two men to voice their amazing documentaries.
I wish that I one day will be able to achieve some of the same feats in journalism and broadcasting that he has. I also hope that I am able to follow his example of how to treat people of all kinds.
I'll end the post with this excellent tribute to Kalas' career produced by Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia. It had me choked up. Thanks to the Good Phight for finding it.

Harry was to Phillie was Chuck Thompson was to Baltimore. And, every baseball city had their own. They were revered, not just well liked…
All my relatives are from Phillie and I had arguments for years on the Mike Schmidt versus Brooks Robinson all-time best 3rd baseman argument. It was the only time I remember every one of my relatives being 100% wrong and me being 100% right. Go #5…

Brooks Robinson rules!
Yeah, Chuck’s passing was also pretty emotional for me, though I was much younger. When Vin Scully passes one day, LA may go into shock for a few days.

We lost Skip Caray from the Braves here in Atlanta last year, and Larry Munson (UGA football – thankfully just retired, not passed), and things haven’t been the same. It’s tough losing a part of the family.
All the best to Philly – it’s a sad time.
