Tom Dunne went out to Bethpage to kickstart his season yesterday and found that Bethpage's Black and Red courses (the best at the park) were taken offline into early April. The reason? You guessed it. The US Open is coming. Tom has some pics of the work being done there.

but this is why a lot of places are telling the USGA to go away. Shutting down TWO courses this far ahead of the tournament is ridiculous. Now the USGA has to pay for the income Bethpage is losing on two courses – OR – they have to raise their greens fees after to make it up. If it’s the latter, they are going to lose traffic on a public facility.
