A Real Anaylsis of Tin Cup
Shane Bacon of Dogs That Chase Cars (and Fanhouse) fame ripped into the movie Tin Cup the other night. Like any true fan of a movie, he figures out the hilariously implausible things about the movie and still loves it anyway.
Seriously. Three wood spins back into the drink? Don Johnson as the best golfer in the world?!

mental note..
..never go see a movie with this guy….and why is he doing this much work on a 10 year old movie ? :-)
I do agree with him on the 3-woodS…MULTIPLE 3 woods spining back off of a green like lob wedge. And the score thing always bugged me, too.
But a lot of these tell me he doesn’t play much golf, or he is one of the lucky few to have never been hit with an attack of the dreaded ssss…shssshhhhhh…shaaaaaaa…..I can’t even bring myself to say it.
On the range – the range was full to the right end. Would he feel better if Cup had asked Johnny Miller to move ?
The shot up the road – it was the entrance to the course heading out to the highway. Most any good pro can pitch a 7 iron straight – jacket or no.
First one out Thursday doesn’t mean last one out on Friday. Morning tee times switch to afternoon tee times and vice versa.
Who said he didn’t play a practice round ? Just because they don’t show it in the movie doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have done it in real life.
Did you not notice the rather large bottle of tequilla consumed the night before the first round and the caddy advice to get drunk the night before ? See…this is what makes Tin Cup TIN CUP – he’s not the stuffed shirt professional – he’s the long shot !
Do you REALLY think that people not driving in a Winnebago are always sober ? PLEASE !!!!!!
Way too picky — but some of those are pretty funny. :-)

Tin Cup
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Incidentally, the 3-woods didn’t spin back off the green. They rolled off the sloped front, which, I agree wouldn’t have been where the pin was, but it’s a movie.
look again...
…especially the first one – they show it in slow motion bouncing up with a ton of backspin.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
It came to rest
I’ve seen the movie at least two dozen times.
I can’t say for sure on all them but one of them came to almost complete rest and then started trickling back – not zipping back, but trickling back. There was definitely no spin on it. Obviously, they didn’t actually hit the shot to the green with a 3-wood for the closeup, but even if they did, a three wood probably has few thousand rpm backspin on it still, so it wouldn’t be odd for it to appear to have backspin. I can say for sure, though, that the spin did NOT suck the ball off the green.
Can you see Gary McCord standing there as the technical advisor for the film saying, “yes, having a 3-wood spin the ball into the water is perfectly normal”?
See for yourself

You might be able to argue it on the second shot that rolls back, however, once it hits the water, they show the green from the side for an instant. Look how severe the slope on the front of that green is! That’s why the ball 1. stops dead, and 2. rolls off.
oh - you're right...
…I made it sound like it zipped back like a wedge – my bad – but it does spin back – and three woods don’t do that. that ball should have bounced forward.
lol – no – McCord was hiding behind the bar. :-)

Look at the green
Look at the brief side shot of the green that I pointed out in my previous comment. That has to be a 40-degree slope with 3 or 4 feet of elevation change back to the wood ties. I could easily see it happening if you hit a shot dead into it.
I can't believe
I’m debating the technical accuracy of Tin Cup. Ok, I have nothing better to do. But I’m standing by this one! :-D
I see it
there is slope on that green – no doubt – but a 3-wood wouldn’t react like that – especially on a US Open green – rock hard greens don’t let fairway woods spin backwards or sideways like that.

The bounce was a bit soft
But don’t forget, it had poured rain one night before (remember Romeo outside the camper…) and it obviously wasn’t very hot.
And, in reality it was probably a guy just throwing the ball onto the green from out of frame, from a cherry picker or from just across the pond. There’s not much they could do about that, I imagine.
Thursday night
the “knock the pelican off it’s perch” scene was after the first round – with the break up and the hook up. The greens would have dried out by Sunday.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Possibly, but not necessarily
If it wasn’t hot and/or windy, it wouldn’t be odd for them to still be a little on the soft side after a few days. When I worked maintenance during college, after a heavy rain we could go a couple of days without watering, even in the heat. Earlier in the year, when the weather wasn’t hot or too windy, we could go several days.
I repeat..
…THE US FRIGGIN’ OPEN !! :-) This ain’t your local muni or college track. The weather in the movie was sunny and warm.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Did you see a single bead of sweat?
One? Anywhere on anyone during the open? Even on Earl? 75-80 degrees isn’t that warm when we’re talking greens. And I didn’t work on a muni or college track.
I was looking at Rene Russo's necklace
Wow, you guys really watch movies differently. I didn’t see any of that. Well, I wouldn’t — I have no idea what you saw. Terry and I actually went to see it together, and we were separated then. Couldn’t imagine watching it with anyone else. I loved it and got very emotional with Cup’s final round. Terry was pretty quiet — maybe he was seeing that 3 wood shot, maybe he was thinking about McCord making a movie…
In any event, I enjoyed the popcorn, thought Don Johnson sucked, and couldn’t take my eyes off that great pearl necklace. Thought her outfits and behavior as a therapist were pretty ridiculous. This is what women watch at a sports movie.
Loved Cheech Marin, too.
sounds like you got it to me...
…Don Johnson was suppose to be the despicable bad guy (bad acting aside), Rene Russo was supposed to be the insecure therapist (she explained the list of bad relationships and jobs that lead to getting her psych degree and license).
So – if Russo’s outfits were ridiculous – how about Doreen’s theory on dressing at work ? Big hair – big make up – big everything ? :-)
Did you notice that you never saw Don Johnson actually hit a ball ? His swing was so bad that they either showed him from the waist up in a swing, or if you saw club meet ball, you never saw his head.

Hah...
Yeah, he was pretty bad. Very wooden. I heard that Costner, on the other hand, hit just about every shot that you see him hit. I’m sure they used Hollywood magic to dress up the results, but my understanding that it’s just about all him really hitting the ball.
yes he did...
…the results weren’t always him – but he made the swings.
I’m not a Costner fan – he is one of the worst speaking actors in the business – but I have to admit that he has presence on the screen…even if he can’t deliver a line to save his life. The guy is pretty athletic and looks good on camera with a club or bat and ball and glove in his hands.

There should be a federal law that Costner can ONLY make sports films. I loved For Love of the Game as well.

LOL
I was surprised that I liked that one, too. He still sucked with his lines – but he still came across well visually. Pretty decent movie.
He just always sounds like he recorded all his words individually, and some tech guy cut and pasted the words together. And god help him if a line sounds better with a contraction – he just can’t pull it off.

I like Costner
There’s no point in beating me down because I already know what a jabroni I am and that I’m definitely in the minority, but I like Costner in most of the movies of his I’ve seen. I’m not saying your characterizations are wrong, but I just don’t tend to notice his acting warts like with some other actors.
no offense intended...
…and some of Costner’s movies are my favorites too – I just see that he has to have a lot of talent around him. He definitely has screen presence. Bull Durham, Silverado, Dances with Wolves, Field of Dreams, The Untouchables – excellent movies.

Oh, I agree
It’s like having a 15 year old car that doesn’t run all that well, but dangit, you just like it.
and somehow...
…I get the feeling that Costner would like that analogy. (he’s a car freak)
