If You Thought Who the '10 Ryder Cup Capn Was a Big Deal...
...then you (a) are probably going to be offended by the following and (b) are not Anthony Kim.
Geoff Shackelford found this in Derek Lawrenson's otherwise great weekly column, which I recommend you read anyway.
'Oh, really? I didn't know Colin had been made captain. I don't follow golf that much.' Anthony Kim, when asked about Monty being made Europe's Ryder Cup skipper. Right before our eyes, the American poster boy turns into the American idiot.
Lawrenson takes it a little too far. Seriously, do you know how many golfers don't follow golf on a day to day basis? Tiger said he didn't even watch the Tour most of the time.
That would be like me watching a webcast about golf blogs on the weekends. Why would I do that?
Still, there's a point to be made here. Kim has out and out shown that he doesn't much follow the sport. He has said he didn't know Tiger has won 14 major championships. Now this.
The question is whether or not that makes him an "American idiot" - I really wonder if Lawrenson was going for the Greenday reference there or not - or like a lot of other pros who really only care about making sure they play well.

"great weekly column" ???
If this is an indication of a “great weekly column”, then standards are kind of low.
Who DIDN’T know that Anthony Kim doesn’t follow golf…or baseball for that matter ? These questions have popped up fairly regularly over the last couple of years and his answers are pretty standard. If it’s not his favorite NBA team, or the NFL, he just doesn’t follow it very closely – INCLUDING GOLF.
So the question SHOULD be – “Mr Lawrenson, where have YOU been the last TWO YEARS of Anthony Kim’s career ?” The captaincy of the Ryder Cup doesn’t matter until August of 2010 when the captain’s picks are made.

Gotta Love It
I love these attempts to make ignorance on the part of professional athletes seem like the players themselves are total morons. So AK doesn’t follow golf like a fan does. So what?
They roasted Donovan McNabb because he didn’t realize that an NFL game could end in a tie. At least you could argue that it’s a rule and it affects the was a game is actually played. What difference does it make if AK knows who the European Ryder Cup captain is?
I said the same thing when the topic came up of him not knowing how many majors Tiger has won. He knows the most important thing. That is, it’s a lot of them. Knowing these things is in no way going to change the way he prepares or how he approaches a tournament or round.
He’s not a fan. Big deal. It’s amazing that it warrants space in someone’s column.

Twenty odd years ago
if someone asked Freddie Couples who Europe’s Ryder Cup captain was, he would have stated, “I do not know and I do not care” and everyone would have laughed. AK doesn’t have to live and breathe this stuff, that’s what they have us (bloggers) for…
Idiot??!! Glass houses, my man, glass houses…
