Lorena Ochoa Wins in Thailand, Creamer Spoiled
Lorena Ochoa posted a final round of 66 to surge to her 25th LPGA Tour victory at the Honda LPGA Thailand. She improved every round from an opening 71 to a final 66 and was three clear of Hee Young Park.
Ochoa was also four clear of Paula Creamer. Creamer was one over in the final round. The Pink Panther came into the final day three strokes ahead of Ochoa. Creamer said that "it wasn't [her] day," which basically meant that Creamer knew she had let a win slip past her hands.
Ochoa came out early and put pressure on Creamer with an opening nine of 32. Creamer clearly felt some pressure or something was off in her game. Bogeys on the second and third holes led to a three shot swing that eliminated Creamer's overnight advantage very quickly. Three more front nine birdies for Ochoa extended the lead even further. With a lead of that size, Ochoa simply had to maintain it for the final nine holes. An inward 34 did just fine.
Ochoa acknowledged her mental toughness to the media after her win, but proved it on the course throughout the week.
Creamer said that, while disappointed, she took a lot of positives from the week. Her next chance to win will come at the HSBC Women's Champions event. That is the event which jumpstarted Ochoa's season last year. Ochoa won that event and four of her next five after it.
