The Golf All-Star Game Idea...Now, With HORSE!
Here at Waggle Room, we've been advocating for a golf all-star game on the PGA Tour since July of last year. Golfweek loved the idea so much that they ripped off of it with their own post supporting the idea. Jay Busbee saw my post and loved the idea and made his own suggestions.
Now, Geoff Shackelford unwittingly added on to the idea by suggesting golf HORSE to liven things up in the game.
While match play is a wonderful format used extensively in the everyday playing of golf, why not try spicing things up and use the tenets of H-O-R-S-E to rekindle the imaginative, childlike qualities of the game that endeared so many of us to golf in the first place? Flip a coin, head to the tee and play a match with a friend where the player with the honor decides what tee you play from. If you want to take things a step further, dictate what club to use from the tee. Maybe a short knocker takes advantage of the honor to dictate a 5-iron from the tee at a reachable par 5, neutralizing his longer opponent's strength while theoretically helping his own cause. Play until you've accumulated H-O-R-S-E or just use traditional match-play scoring. I think it's a great idea, particularly for our golf all-star game. How crazy would it be if Tiger forced Vijay Singh to hit a draw instead of a cut just to stay alive in golf HORSE? Or how about making a European player hit a Mickelson flop shot that they don't practice? The possibilities are endless, just like the old McDonald's commercial featuring Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. How about a Mickelson-Woods HORSE game?

BTW, Court, I found a media player with fast forward/rewind that I have embedded on the site and each show post now. You can listen easily now!

I wasn’t particularly into this idea when Geoff first proposed it but it’s definitely gowing on me!

If you can put it in the right context, I think golf HORSE makes total sense, even if on the range.

look at it this way...
…they already SORT OF do this with The Big Break shows. The players don’t call the shots, but they do have to come up with a number of (more or less) trick and skill shots – over the wall, around the wall, under trees, bunker shots… Seems like they actually did play a version of HORSE in two of the shows – closest to the pin assigned a letter to whoever they wanted. Not exactly the same – and definitely not the skill level of a Tiger or Phil or whoever they would get to play – but it actually worked pretty well.
I’m having a blast watching that old McDonald’s commercial. It’s still an all timer.
