Fantasy Crystal Ball: CA Championship
Be sure to stop by Waggle Room's Fantasy Golf sponsors, 14stix.com and GolfStakes.com!
We have the second of three World Golf Championships this week. It is the CA Championship and it is played at Miami's Doral. The Blue Monster is a fierce course if the wind is blowing. If the winds are calm, expect a whole ton o' birdies. Doral is basically defenseless in perfect weather.
You would be a fool not to pick two of these three guys: Tiger Woods, Geoff Ogilvy, and Phil Mickelson.
Woods' record at Doral has been beaten into the ground. Six starts, three wins. He has won this tournament - played at different loactions - six of the nine times it has been contested. The guy is a lock except for the fact that this is Woods' second tournament back. Strip out that last part and I wouldn't even have to write this column. Dena Davis of Golf Channel fame is with me on this one.
Ogilvy is defending champion, hottest player in the world right now, and awesome. Had to think of a third thing to say.
Phil Mickelson is pretty good at Doral. He finished runner up to Woods in 2005 in a classic. But, he finishes Top 25 or so in his last few starts there. Flip a coin - do you believe in Phil or not?
Jay Coffin of Golf Channel, though, is going with Sergio Garcia. As we pointed out in our piece on Sergio's chances to reach number one this week, Garcia has handled Doral well of late. Earlier in his career, he didn't do so well. When in doubt, pick recent trends.
What a fun B-list and C-list that we have this week, though. You know all of the names. I like Steve Stricker here, with a T6 last year. I'm also feeling a Ken Duke sighting this week. Believe it or not, Aaron Baddeley has a good record at Doral. And don't ask me why, but I like DL3 this week. He's desperate to get into the Masters. He hasn't finished this event since 2005, though.
On the C-list, I'm letting it ride with YE Yang and I will start Luke Donald until someone explains to me how he is on the C-list.

Well....Call me a fool then.
I went with Vijay and Serg as my A-Lister’s. I am not ready to waste a Tiger start quite yet and Vijay was tied with Tiger and Goosen for 2nd last year.
As a surprise for my B-Lister I am starting Steven Ames. He tied for 15th last year and already had a nice tournament this year at the Bob Hope Classic (Finished high, not quite sure where though).
Went with Goosen and Poulter as a sleeper on my C-List. Poulter won a couple of matches at the Accenture.

Ya know, that’s not a bad call on Vijay. I thought about mentioning him.
Ames isn’t a bad idea either. I still can’t believe Goosen in on the C-list.

I thought it was more
to put someone that is ‘pickable’ to compete with those other guys on there.

Donald--C-List?
The only reason I can think of is that his injury limited his play last season to, what? 11 events? So he was fairly low in the rankings….
Did you see Ian Poulter down there on the C-list, too? I would have picked him this week (what with Luke’s ?-able wrist and all) if not for the fact that he’s a new dad—again.

Villegas
(ok – this isn’t real – and Bob Smiley – ForeRightBob.com – would probably shoot me for doing it this way – but I’m laughing too hard right now…)
CA CHAMPIONSHIP: Camilo Villegas WD’s, Cites Extreme Sexiness
Less than 24 hours before the opening round of the WGC-CA Championship at Doral, PGA Tour player and Miami favorite Camilo Villegas has announced a surprise withdrawl, telling reporters that he woke up Wednesday feeling “too sexy” and the condition only became worse as the day went on.
Sporting white pants, a white shirt and a yellow belt, Villegas completed just five holes in his Wednesday practice round before shaking his head and walking off the course. In the media tent, Villegas explained his departure. “Until recently I’ve always managed to keep my sexiness under control,” Villegas began, “but after missing the cut [at the Honda Classic] last week, I worked out very hard and had my tailor take in my sleeves and pants an extra inch. The combination has made me far too sexy to compete.”
Asked to elaborate, Villegas explained that his sexiness had reached a point where it could be a distraction to “less sexy” players like Tim Clark and Jeev Milkha Singh. “The last thing I want to do is have a player not be able to hit the shot he wants because he’s thinking ‘Man, Camilo is so much more sexy than I am.’ I just couldn’t sleep if I won like that. Of course, I don’t get much sleep anyway. Because of my sexiness.”
Villegas said he expects to have his sexiness back at a manageable level by the Bay Hill Invitational.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Hahaha, that’s awesome. There has been a lot of media fawning over him this week in Miami for some obvious reasons.

he's just hoping..
…it’s mostly the women media…the guys at South Beach might be a little more frisky than he prefers. :-)
