T+L Golf Magazine, We Hardly Knew Ye
Travel and Leisure Golf Magazine (aka T+L Golf), which was published by American Express, has officially folded shop. Folio reports:
"While the award-winning editorial product has enjoyed a loyal and passionate following, the current advertising climate has severely impacted the magazine’s bottom line to where the short-term and mid-term prospects for the magazine are not viable,” president and CEO Ed Kelly said in a statement.
Travel + Leisure Golf carried a bi-monthly circulation of 625,000. Ad pages were down 13.9 percent in 2008, according to Publishers Information Bureau figures.
It did have many excellent pieces of writing between its pages and pages of advertising and paid pieces. Then again, that's kind of the business model of a magazine like this one. Reminded me in some ways of a great magazine here in Baltimore, called Baltimore magazine. Great writing, but just too much advertising for my taste.
I'm not sure if this calls American Express' commitment to golf - and its sponsorship with the USGA - into question or not.

that's a shame
this was a terrific magazine – great photography
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Unsurprising, but still heavy news for the print media.
T+L did a great article on challenges to the great coastal golf courses in the face of climate change.
Crowbush Cove in PEI is amongst those they examined.
