What PGA Tour Players Really Think
Golf Digest does a survey each year of Tour players to get their anonymous thoughts on a variety of subjects. It's always a fairly revealing survey, and this year is no different. Some of the questions that I found most interesting (and/or true) were:
NAME ONE GOLF ANNOUNCER YOU COULD LIVE WITHOUT
Kelly Tilghman: 30%
Nick Faldo: 17%
Peter Kostis: 13%
Johnny Miller: 9%
OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Curt Byrum, Bobby Clampett, Brian Hammons, John Hawkins, Renton Laidlaw, Dave Marr III, Gary McCord, Mark Rolfing
So, basically anyone that does color commentary...and Kelly Tilghman. No hatred for Dan Hicks and Jim Nantz.
And two questions for the bitter birds...
WHICH PLAYER OVERACHIEVED MOST IN THE MARRIAGE DEPARTMENT?
Jim Furyk: 17%
Phil Mickelson: 13%
"All of us!": 13%
Eric Axley: 8%
Parker McLachlin: 8%
Tiger Woods: 8%
OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Stephen Ames, Aaron Baddeley, Mark Calcavecchia, Bob Estes, Steve Lowery, John Rollins
COMMENTS: "The greatest overachiever is Dean Wilson, and all the women he blows through." ... "Furyk might be married to Joe the Plumber's sister if he weren't a professional golfer." ..."Tiger? He has nothing going for him, and he got that girl?"
Seriously, though, Furyk really won the lottery.

And, of course...
WHO'S THE MOST OVER-HYPED PLAYER ON TOUR?
Charles Howell III: 19%
Bubba Watson: 14%
Luke Donald: 10%
Rory Sabbatini: 10%
OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Woody Austin, John Daly, Chris DiMarco, Sergio Garcia, Hunter Mahan, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas
COMMENT: "It used to be Camilo Villegas, but after his two wins you can't say that anymore."

I'm in there, too
Renton is top 2 or 3 on my list.
I’m shocked that Miller didn’t get more votes – Tilghman is the only name on that list worse than Miller, and they could tie because they do different jobs. Bobby Clampett is about as annoying as anybody, but he only shows up a couple of times a year.
How in the world is CH III the most over-hyped golfer ? They don’t go out of their way to show him on TV, so you only see him when he’s on the first page of the leaderboard, or on a Bridgestone commercial.
I’m sure they are trying to mix in a little humor with a couple of decent questions in this survey – but most of these seem like cheap shots.

CH3
Would’ve been like 5 years ago. Not so much now.

hmm
No mention of Harrington on the slowest player list ?
And no mention of David Duval on the brightest player list ? I guess it’s one of those “out of sight – out of mind” things
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Same thing w/CH3
Just makes you scratch your head. Then again, it’s only 25 guys out of 200 some.

Renton.....
Renton is ok. But he reminds me of the way my Grandpa would commentate. Nice, lovely voice, trails off into some other story and kinda seems to miss some great shots played. It’s all sweet but golf needs more upbeat commentary these days. It’s nice to hear for us who love the game but I’d hate to think of someone switching over to the golf who’s not a big fan and hearing the talk. They wouldn’t stay long.
Faldo
Aside from a few months before the Ryder Cup – Faldo is the best at mixing humor and poetry (love of the game) with ACCURATE analysis…unlike Johnny Miller, who colors all of his analysis with his own bizarre memories of his own greatness.
I understand what you’re saying about Renton Laidlaw being someone a purist would appreciate more than a casual viewer. You’re right – we live in a time where people would rather watch pro wrestling than real sports.
