Buick Invitational is Missing Buzz

That's what Larry Bohannan is reporting in the Desert Sun.  More succinctly, Larry notes, the Buick Invitational is missing Tiger Woods.  Rocco Mediate was to return to the site of where he participated in arguably the greatest major championship ever contested.  But, he withdrew yesterday for personal reasons.  And his playoff opponent for 19 holes will not be there.

That means that the Buick Invitational will have just 10 of last year's top 30 money winners in its field this week.

By comparison, the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic also had 10 of the top 30 from 2008's money list in its field until La Quinta's Anthony Kim withdrew from the event the day before the tournament.

And yes, the Buick field does feature Mickelson and Padraig Harrington, which is better than the Hope's field. But with no Woods and fewer international stars than in recent years, the Buick is coming back down to earth after several years of riding high.

That's not a bad field, salvaged by the popular lefty and the only man capable of winning a Tiger-slam right now.

Still, Larry rightly points out that the Hope and Buick have a lot of similarities in their struggles to attract solid fields this year and in the sponsor difficulties that they surely face.

Whatever...

…I’m really tired of these media guys who need their “fix” of buzz every week. These articles are crap and do nothing to promote the tournament.

These are the same mental midget articles that we had leading up to the Superbowl last weekend – OOPS ! That turned out to be a great game despite all the doom and gloom in the media.

Instead of mailing in these lame articles about the Buick (et al) – how about doing a little research into the guys who ARE playing and maybe you’ll learn that these guys ARE that good and this could be a very exciting tournament. (oh wait – that would require EFFORT) Look what happened last weekend in Phoenix without Mickelnuts, Holmes, and most of the other “buzz” names.

by the way..

…the thing that is going to be a drag on the tournament this week is the four days of chill and rain they are expecting in San Diego.

I just have to say...

I laugh every single time I read Mickelnuts. I mean it. Every time.

And I agree 100% with your assessment of the media doom and gloom perspective.

I didn't think

That Larry needed a whole piece to basically say that Tiger isn’t going to be there.

And I agree that we’ll still have a good tournament. But, people were leaving in droves after the FBR went to a playoff because they were going home to watch the Superbowl. Without the NFL around now, golf can get undivided attention from fans.

Still, you have to consider the media perspective in this. They’re thinking from media world, in which big names matter almost as much as the quality of golf. There’s a reason that few people watch the Champ or N’Wide Tours despite some high quality golf being played.

THIS year...

…but this was the first time the Cards had been to the Superbowl – cut the fans a little slack. Every other year, the grounds stay full and the pavillions are packed by patrons and partiers who stick around to watch the game at the golf course after the tournament is done.

I agree with you

This was a big deal in Arizona, so that’s just a condition of the day – not the golf.

and...

…I don’t excuse the media for anything – especially laziness.

The sorry butt golf media

Which Larry B appears to be a card carrying member. There can only be two stories- Tiger is playing this week or Tiger isn’t playing this week.

Golf World covers those two themes in half of what they publish, either that or its about Phil Mickelson. Karrie Webb won the Kraft Nabisco two years ago, holing out on 18 but what’s the newsmaker of the week on GW’s front cover? If you guessed Lefty winning in Atlanta by 12 shots against a C- field, you’re absolutely correct. Pak wins her fifth Farr, but GW puts lefty on the cover for losing a playoff in Europe some where. It was only appropriate the magazine showed a shot of PM bending over since that’s what the people in CT must have fantasies of. Other than stupidity, a man crush is the only explanation for some of the stuff that magazine pulls(Don’t forget it was Lefty featured on the cover, not Ogilvy after the 2006 US Open).
