Proof Positive the Americans Don't Know Golf

I received an email from the folks at a site called Predicto.  It's a site that asks people to make predictions about sports, pop culture, and the like.  If you get it right, or enough of them right, you win a prize.  That's not the point though.

In the email, I was told that 74% of people responded that Tiger Woods would win his first tournament back after knee surgery.

74% of Americans were wrong.  Dead wrong.  I was wrong.  I picked Woods to reach the finals against Martin Kaymer.  That's not happening now.

Look, match play is awfully tough to predict.  It is the most unpredictable format in golf.  Every number one seed in the Match Play event is gone now.  There are much better chances of a #1 seed being successful in the NCAA tournament.

Even during a slightly more predictable medal play event, you would be a goofball to bet on a single player to win a tournament.  Despite Tiger Woods' ungodly winning percentage over the years, I would still pick the field in any tournament if I had to wager.

The field at the Accenture Match Play comprises the 64 best players in the world by ranking.  To be that good, you are likely capable of beating any one player on any given day in one round of golf.  Tiger knew that going into it.  That's why he picked this event instead of another to make his comeback.  Match play requires consistency, aggression, and a desperation to win.  Tiger had it in his two matches.  It just so turns out that Tim Clark had a better combination today.

If you played that match 100 times, Woods might win 70 or 80 times.  The beauty of this tournament is that they only play once.  The "one game scenario" is why the NBA has seven game series, and why MLB loathes the idea of a series less than 5 games.  Series - like four round tournaments - tend to allow the best to emerge.

For the Tour and the companies that sponsor golf, this is a disappointment.  To mainstream golf fans, Woods' defeat is a huge letdown.  On the other hand, this is one of Tim Clark's finest hours.  He has finished on the medal stand in two majors before and I am telling you that this one round ranks right up there with those finishes.

Clark may not be young, American, or particularly handsome, but this guy can play.  He's a good man.  He won the Australian Open this year.  The guy could be marketed as the David to our sport's Goliath.  Likely, that won't happen.

Still, Clark should be celebrated for his win.  He earned it and Woods will tell you as much.  In fact, Woods may have been the only man in America to think that this was possible.  Perhaps that is proof positive that Tiger Woods is an awfully smart man.

Well Done, Tim Clark

You’re right on, Ryan. People don’t get it. Match play is a different format, and golf is definitely a different game. As Tiger said, he played pretty well today. Just didn’t make enough putts in the middle of the round. Clark played great and didn’t disappear in Tiger’s shadow. You have to give credit where credit is due.

Americans don't know golf

Thanks for a great post. I agree with all of it, except for one thing: I knew Tiger might not win. There is no guarantee in golf, not even for SuperPlayers. I realize he carries the hopes and idolization of a nation on his shoulders, but give the man a break. He’s just come off a painful major knee surgery, a new addition to his family and eight months away.

I’m amazed at the fan fantasy that he’s somehow invincible… maybe somehow not human, like an android.

Imagine what it must be like to carry that with you. The disappointment of a nation. Whew.

Cheers for Tim Clark. Not for being David to Tiger’s Goliath, but for showing what drama and skill match play can bring out in a competitor.

part of the 26%...

…thank you very much :-) (of course – after the second round, I only have 4 players left and only 1 in the final four – at least he’s my eventual winner)

How do you know that the 74% figure is only made up of Americans ?

another prediction ? Tiger Woods is in his doctor’s office tomorrow having the knee checked on. He didn’t look comfortable after that 3-wood on the 2nd hole – and he had a bad case of the rights later on, getting through very late.

no way he's fine...

he took 8 months off, of course he’s going to be rusty. to automatically blame the knee for a few swing faults is a cop out. the purpose was to ultimately win but also warm up for the Masters, taste a little blood, plant the seed in the other players heads, get the juices flowing, get his swing back and destroy as the season goes on…zippy chance he’s pushing the ball in April, when his swing is gonna be SILLY!

A lot of people probably bet the mortgage on tiger because it’s usually a safe bet, but to say he’s going to win a match play event his first week out is kinda crazy. I say ‘kinda’ because it’s Tiger and he’s done some amazing things so i wouldn’t have put it past him to win this week. If it were a standard stroke play event he would’ve shot somewhere around -1 yesterday, doesn’t mean he won’t come out and shot -6 under the next. But for 75% to say he was going to win, that’s nuts and yes proves they don’t know golf.

not intended as an excuse...

…I was saying that he would be in the doctor’s office today to make sure everything is ok. Dollars to doughnuts – there is some swelling in the knee after 2 rounds on that golf course. He didn’t have his usual “fresh as a daisy” look to him on the back 9.

Just saying that the knee is not 100% and not ready for 4 days of stress…yet.

That’s possible. I’m wondering how much of it was that this was kind of unexpected. Not so much that Clark beat him, but how he played so lights out to do it.

Clark is Mr Steady

The pressure he put on Tiger was from his steadiness. Tiger knew he had to make birdies to win because Clark doesn’t make bogies.

I really think all that walking and the second shot on the par 5 2nd hole stressed the knee and threw him off just enough for Clark to win. He’s been playing on flat Florida courses and riding in carts – not walking 7800 yard golf courses with a lot of hills and awkward lies.

I’m saying fatigue – not a re-injury.

i think the knee is 100%...

not a chance in hell he comes back if it’s anything less. he knows the tourny is 5 days so 4 days of ‘stress’ were probably the least of his concerns. he’s also in great shape i highly doubt he was tired, he didn’t make birdies that’s why he lost and he ran into a red hot golfer. all knee speculation and health issues should be put to rest IMMEDIATELY. hey ryan create and edict on the blog proclaiming no more knee talk, it’s old and over played.

as you wish

his caddy said that the walking was a bit of a struggle before they left Florida.

I’m just saying – reconstructive knee surgery takes more than 8 months to completely heal. Look at football players who insist on coming back after 1 year – they rarely get back in form until the second season.

Totally agree with you Ryan. That is the beauty of match play.

While Stroke play determines the most consistent golfer over the four days, this tournament is different in the sense that it does not determine the best golfer in terms of scoring but how they held their own against each of their opponents. And mind you, it is a real challenge and a terrible week for the prediction masters because there is only so much prediction you can do about someone else’s mental fortitude. Tim Clark shows that it is still possible to beat Tiger! Tiger has shown enough glimpses this past week in Tucson that the knee is well and truly in its place and not going to give up on him anytime soon.

I was really hoping to see Martin Kaymer do well this week. Not a lot of Americans have had a chance to see Martin Kaymer at his best but believe you me, the kid can play! He might have bowed out early, this week at the Accenture Match Play but he will back and competing regularly on Sunday afternoons and winning a fair few titles in my opinion.

Cheers

Glad that you’re a Kaymer fan, too, Andy! I’ve loved him since the beginning. He will make his splash here. I’m sure of it.

The unpredictability of match play relative to medal play is why I love it so much. The underdog is more likely to win. There’s “parity” in match play. That’s why Americans love the NFL, in part. The problem for the PGA Tour is that parity with over 200 players is tough to follow.

watch out for the Euros next year in Wales

We saw three new members of the Ryder Cup team for 2010 – Kaymer, Owen Wilson (if he’s not making a new movie), and Ross Fisher.
