Accenture Match Play Day 2 MEGA Thread
I'm going to try something today with the second round of the Accenture Match Play. We're going to hit this from two sides. Any comments we want to make about today's matches can be done in the Comments section below. And, we've created a Twitter hash tag, #matchplay, that anyone can use to have their comment posted on a RSS feed. That feed will display after the jump. We'll get it from all angles today!
Let 'er rip!
Here's some data for yesterday to ponder:
- 13 matches were won by the lower seed. Among those 13, six came from the Player Bracket.
- 13 matches also went the distance or into overtime.
- Two #1 seeds are gone, as well as two #2s.
- The biggest win belonged to Camilo Villegas, who went 7 & 6 on Rod Pampling. (At least it's not 9 & 8, right, Stephen Ames?)
Also, here are some clippings from stories from yesterday:
1. Brendan Jones deserves some credit for losing to Woods 3&2. Apparently, he's been away from the game himself.
“I’ve been away from the game for two months,” Jones said. “Losing 3-and-2 to Tiger Woods, I’m pretty happy with it.” Later he went further: “I’m quite happy I didn’t disgrace myself.”
It showed - Jones did not make a single birdie all day. [Golfweek]
2. PGATour.com has a good summary of all 32 matches from yesterday. [PGATour.com]
3. In a "I Called It" special, Pat Perez took out Padraig Harrington. I also called Schwartzel beating Sergio, but Double P is a more interesting cat.
Perez was left shaking his head about how hard it was to shake Harrington, the reigning champion of the British Open and PGA Championship. Perez won the first hole, but after hitting his approach to 11 inches on the par-5 second for eagle, Harrington halved him by chipping in.
“He made a lot of putts today and made a lot of shots that you don't count on people hitting, and he pulls them off,” Perez said. “He's phenomenal.”
Double P continues his run today against Ross Fisher. [San Diego Union-Tribune]
Dave's favorite moment?
[W]hen Tiger knocked it onto the par 4 15th with his tee shot, then Jones put it inside him. This just after Nick Faldo laughingly commented: "He needs 2 to continue. That's a bit of a daunting feeling on a day like today, to think 'I need 2 on a par 4 to continue.'" Jones jarred the 8-foot putt, improbably extending the match to dormie 3.
Hard to argue with that.

there weren't a lot of birdies yesterday
new golf course with undulating greens running at a paltry 10.5. There were a lot of putts left short. Faldo said it best when they talked about the speed of the greens – “10 and a half is like glue to these guys.”
Even in a greatly reduced role – Kelly Tilghman couldn’t help herself. “How fitting that Tiger’s return comes on a Jack Nicklaus’ designed course.” WHAT ??? Welcome to the world of the Tilghman Non-Sequitor.

Faldo was awesome yesterday, and I was starting to get tired of him a little. I’m back on board.
I asked the Golf Channel about Kelly’s schedule for how much she anchors this season. They said it would be about the same to free her up for Golf Central and other duties.

sounded like she was at the tournament
I really hope they can get her back behind the desk for Golf Central – she was always good there…reading a teleprompter.
Good to see Steve Sands doing more interviews. RB – I think xxx GC people are reading WR posts – these are the things we have been pushing !!
And what the heck were those jersies that the Terps were wearing last night ? YELLOW ?? (great game though)

We did yellow back in the Len Bias days and had been clamoring to get those jerseys back since then. Glad we do have em back. Bought one the day they came out! Great game, but tough loss.
I don’t know if they’ve been reading what we say and taking it to heart. But, it would be nice if they did sometimes.

YELLOW ???
I had a yellow car – no problem with the color – but where did it come from ? I thought UM was red and black. (I’ve still never seen a red turtle) :-)

Our school colors are red, black, yellow, and white (the MD state flag). Our fight song says to raise high the black and gold, so red shouldn’t even be in there. :)

Hashtags
Are something you add to a post on Twitter. So, for example, I could have a post that says, “Wow, the #matchplay is so thrilling today!” And because that “#matchplay” is in there, it will show up on the Google widget above.

So, the the third bullet point at the top does or does not contain twitter hashtags?
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
It hypothetically would, yes, if that was a tweet that I made on Twitter. The idea behind hashtags – I think – is to get people to use the same term in each tweet so that you could search for them easily.

ok...
…so we have to go to Twitter – and type away – but #matchplay has to be in the post for it to go to the special page for the tournament ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
No, you can just comment here like always. BUT, if you want to use Twitter, just add “#matchplay” to your tweet and it’ll show up in the Google widget above.

so...
…what I typed above went to Twitter ? or does is it just start at a set time of day ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Nope, any comment you make doesn’t go into Twitter. Only tweets with “#matchplay” will show up on this post.

now I'm really lost
Ok – so we DO have to go to Twitter – type type type – BUT we have to put #matchplay in that message for it to go to the special page for the Matchplay ?
there isn’t a specially addressed page just for the Match Play ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
oh geez...
twitter, tweets??? I’m totally clueless – I just learned how to do Facebook! :-)
I’ll just wait for someone to tell me all my guys won today!
ok - that was a lash...
…270 yard 3 wood on the second hole to about 30 feet. guess he hasn’t lost too much on the swing speed !!

Tiger's missing right
Tiger has now missed a pretty good string of shots to the right – getting through late. Fatigue ? Fatigue of the knee ? Just mentally tired ?

Good thing I'm not a big gambler...
…Anthony Kim…gone……Steve Stricker….gone…..Tiger’s in a big hole….Westwood gone…McIllroy in a hole…Sabbatini gone…DL III gone…
