Match Play Championship: Jones Bracket Breakdown
The Jones Bracket in the Accenture Match Play Championship features Tiger Woods as the number 1 seed. It also features a lot of young land mines that Woods could step on in his path to a fourth match play title. Rory McIlroy and Louis Oosthuizen face off in round one. If one of them can beat the winner of Mike Weir and Hunter Mahan, then they set up a great showdown with Woods.
Woods will have difficulty himself in round two, with either two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen or fellow South African and streaky putter Tim Clark awaiting him.
The other two players that I consider most dangerous in this sub-bracket are Camilo Villegas and Geoff Ogilvy. Ogilvy has advanced to the final in this tournament before, when Henrik Stenson won. He has a win already this year. Villegas had a close call in San Diego before Nick Watney won at Torrey Pines. Of the two, I like Ogilvy more.
That said, here's how I see the Jones Bracket panning out:
Round 1 Winners: Woods, Goosen, McIlroy, Weir, Ogilvy, Katayama, Villegas, Sabbatini
Round 2 Winners: Woods, Weir, Ogilvy, Sabbatini
Round 3 Winners: Woods, Sabbatini
Sub-Bracket Winner: Woods

stay away from Vegas (lol)
rnd 1 – Woods, Clark, McIllroy, Mahan, Ogilvy, Immelman, Villegas, Sabbatini
rnd 2 – Woods, Mahan, Ogilvy, Villegas
rnd 3 – Woods, Ogilvy (but if Tiger is going to lose, this is the round – IF Mahan gets on one of his hot streaks – but that’s a huge IF)
rnd 4 – tough call – Ogilvy has beaten Woods in stroke play – so it’s going to come down to how many holes Woods has played in the first 3 rounds and how tired that knee is, and if Tiger is going to have a chance to stomp all over Mickelson in the semi. Winner – Ogilvy.

I was tempted to go with Ogilvy all the way through. This is definitely for giggles, though. This thing is impossible to predict, but fun to talk about.

all the way through ?
you have him getting beat by Sabbatini – all Ogilvy has to do is slow the play down a bit watch Rory’s head explode. :-)

I like what I saw out of Rory at Riviera, though. Not sure why, but I liked it.

I went with...
Woods beating Ogilvy, too – overall, I just decided to go with my favorite players all the way through the brackets – I do have a small wager on this, so I probably should have done a bit more research…but as long as Tiger wins, I think I’ll be good!
cool !
I didn’t know we had a degenerate gambler on site !! :-)
Hey – it’s match play and these are 64 of the very best in the world – it’s POSSIBLE that #64 could win – not likely, but possible.
Good luck on the bet !!

I've seen several people pick
McIllory to advance and beat Tiger. What are your thoughts on his game, and can he translate it to the Match Play format?
"I have come that you may have life, and life to the max"
what's not to like ?
he’s been playing well the last 6 months – he’s been on a big stage and done pretty well (the British Open) – he’s from the UK, so you know he’s played a lot of match play golf.
what’s against him is his experience – he’s still only 19 and getting his feet wet – he won in Dubai, but not against the best of the best…yet. I could see him getting TO the third round against Tiger, but unless Tiger’s knee is falling apart, Tiger has too much for McIllroy right now.

He could totally do it. It’s possible. His professional career has been nothing but an unheralded success. Tiger might be rusty, play a bad round. Rory might just outplay him. I think match play helps Rory because he is still learning to cope with nerves and closing things out. He can get a good sized lead and just hold on.

I see...
my sleeper pick Pampling didn’t quite pan out – 7 & 6 – whoops!
THUMP
that one didn’t last long – but you didn’t post your Bobby Jones bracket…does it count as a loss ? :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Um...
I had Pampling going out to Ogilvy but beating Villegas and Sabbatini.
But I’ll take the win when Woods goes all the way!
With just a quick look at the brackets, my winners have a pretty good chance of going down in the first round! Now that would stink – I say we re-load after round one. ;-)
oops
that sounds like my NCAA brackets every year – and every year, we have a secondary “do over” pool.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
This is almost funny...
Not only does Pampling tank, but Sabbatini is out, too – I am awful at this.
definitely a little rust...
…Tiger’s game looks smooth – he hasn’t had to push himself very hard today – but there is a little bit of mental rust and fatigue. His short iron approaches and his putting are not sharp…yet.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
He will get there, but it’ll take some time to get back in the groove.

not sure I've ever seen that before...
…Tiger Woods hitting a fairway wood into a par 5 green…on his third shot.
