Fantasy Crystal Ball: Accenture Match Play Championship

Be sure to check out this season's Waggle Room Fantasy Golf sponsors - 14stix.com and GolfStakes.com!

Tiger Woods returns this week to the PGA Tour by playing in the 64 player Accenture Match Play Championship.  This is one of my favorite weeks of the year because I love to watch match play.  It's what I grew up playing in high school golf and was such a blast, particularly when I got a clean slate after a double bogey.

These guys won't be making many or any of those.  The new host of the tournament - The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club @ Dove Mountain - will be set up for birdie-making.  (Not baby-making.)  To win this championship, a player has to be aggressive and precise.  The Nicklaus design is over 7800 yards and plays to a par of 72.  Though being played in the desert, that length will likely favor longer players because the course will play somewhere in the area of 7500 normal yards.

Take a look at the brackets.  Like all years, there are four sub-brackets of 16 to get to the finals.  Each day features one round, except on Saturday, when the quarter and semi final matches are contested in the morning and afternoon.  To win, a player has to take six matches, including the final 36 hole match.  That's a lot of golf.

That's what made people wonder why Tiger's playing this week as opposed to a 72 hole, medal play event like Doral.  As I've said before, this kind of precision and aggression is a great test for where Woods is in his re-development.

Aside from Tiger, though, there are 63 other players that could make a run to the title this week.  We'll take a look at each sub-bracket and take you to the end of the tournament in five subsequent posts - one for each sub-bracket and one for the final four.

Crystal Ball

Your crystal ball couldn’t resist Tiger’s return either? I’m stuck trying to pick players for the uninspiring Mayakoba Classic.

Haha, I’m way more interested in the match play. Sorry!

how does that work ?

Are there entries for both tournaments in the fantasy golf this week ?

“uninspiring” – I hate that word – I’ll start using it when I’m good enough to play better than these guys.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

It's all relative

I can watch Tiger’s comeback into a match play tournament that I am normally fond of. Or, I can watch the Mayakoba Classic. Hmm….

Reminds me of that scene in one of the Wayne’s World movies where they talk about going to visit Delaware. Oops…I live 30 minutes from there too.
