A Little Truth About Golf on TV
You and I, we're golf fans. We like watching golf (and playing it) regardless of circumstances. Good golf is good golf. The name on the caddy bib doesn't dictate if it is interesting or not.
The problem is that most sports fans only care about two players - Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie. Last week, when we were announcing Tiger's comeback at the Match Play, that story got more hits to it than any other in the history of Waggle Room. (And that includes the post with Natalie Gulbis bikini pictures which like 10 people find a week.)
Jay Busbee linked to the post about Tiger then and did me a huge unsolicited favor by virtue of it. His blog got a ton of traffic with Tiger's return and so did Waggle Room.
His proof positive that Michelle "moves the meter" came from the ratings that the LPGA posted on their website today.
The three-day telecast by Golf Channel averaged 323,000 households, up 34% from the 2008 number. Final-round coverage drew 428,000 households, the fourth-largest audience for a single LPGA round on the channel ... [D]uring the week of the SBS Open, LPGA.com registered 5.2 million page views, up 55% from last year's event and the second-highest traffic since the site registered 6.1 million page views for the '06 Evian Masters, an event in which Wie finished tied for second.
Bottom line: people care about women's golf when Michelle Wie is in contention. If she's not? Then it's us watching. That's totally ok for you and I because it makes no difference on our appreciation of the game.
The business side of the LPGA and PGA Tours feel differently, though.
PGA Tour Commish Tim Finchem said he was "delighted" to have Tiger Woods back. That's an understatement of the year candidate. He did a backflip in his office. He couldn't say "We're saved!" in a press release because it would offend the other guys.
LPGA Tour Commissioner Carolyn Bivens probably rolled around in a pile of $100 bills when she saw the ratings for the SBS Open. The LPGA Tour benefitted from Michelle Wie getting her card and the growth of young, attractive players that hopefully will help the Tour grow. I would bet, though, that Wie's presence sure did help entice Golf Channel's Page Thompson to pony up on some rights fees.
Like I said, these two players are a lot of fun to watch. One is the greatest ever. The other is a compelling figure. (You figure out who's who.) Still, it has to be discouraging to the people that cut and cash the checks that only two names seem to perk more ears than ours.

You needed Busbee to tell you that? I’ve been saying it for weeks.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

Nah, definitely didn’t need Jay to say it. But, wanted to use the stats to show it.

What, no links to the Natalie bikini pics? ;)
Guess the equipment companies better spend some more time and money telling the general non-golfing public who they should watch. Or maybe the PGA tour should get off it’s rear and promote it’s personalities like the NFL and NBA do.

some people NEED numbers...
…most of us already know that the American viewing public is fairly ignorant about what they watch and are very easily manipulated.
Who is the Tour going to push ? They can’t find anyone who can consistently finish in the top 10, much less stand up to Tiger.
The LPGA has a slightly easier job for the time being – Wie hasn’t figured out how to win – but it may not be long.

Especially when we’re not the ones that are being coveted. They’re trying to draw in the casual fans (because the rest of us are watching anyway) and trying sell it with Steve Stricker’s solid play at Riviera isn’t going to cut it.

I love Steve Stricker, but he is not going to be appearing in any calendars anytime soon :)

Golf on TV
Surprised no mention of the Zinger/Faldo reunion in the booth this week for the Match Play…now if we could just get Kelly out of there…

Suicide Watch
Ever think about Tiger going down in the first round? I have. Imagine the panic at The Golf Channel. Keep Dr. Kervorkian on standby!

not the first round
unless his knee snaps – he has something to prove. he’s going to want to send a message in the first round.

Golf on TV
Sometimes there is a wide gap between golf on tv and real golf…especially on the Golf Channel.

Michelle Wie...
Who are the “us” watching her and the LPGA? I’m a die-hard PGA fan and like everyone here i’ve watched some/pieces/a few shots/a round/minutes/hours of each tourny that i’ve had time to watch since Tiger went out. The last thing, no matter who’s playing, i’m going to watch is an LPGA event. It’s no slight against the players, their talent, the level of play, men v. women, etc. etc, it’s just the last thing on my mind to watch. Even if Wie is playing, i’m not watching and I’d say 5 or 6 friends I play and watch golf with aren’t watching either. I may think diferently if I gave it a try, but it’s just not high on my list. Don’t bash me because i’m a hating on female sports or thumping my chest, because i’m not, but it’s just not for me.

Everyone has their preferences, so I’m not worried about that at all. There are a good number of people who read here that watch the LPGA and really enjoy it, so wanted to be inclusive of them.

GASP !!!!!
BLASPHEMER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good lord, man – do you realize you’re talking about THE WIE ??? It is required that we pay homage to the savior of women’s golf, and the once and future queen of all golf…not to mention 11 time Masters Champion (prefering a more fitted green jacket, if you please), Ryder Cup standout and future captain….. :-)
Watch what you want nobody is saying that you’re “hating” on women’s sports if you prefer watching the men’s game. Most of us don’t have time to watch every tournament, and for the time being, we’re allowed to choose what we like. (just look out for those black helicopters) :-D

not trying to be a dick...
or tell people to pick up the remote and change the channel, merely curious if the LPGA is watched as an alternative to the PGA?
As for Wie your first paragraph was hilarious and comedy fully noted. Maybe I’ll watch her once she wins, in the mean time she’s over rated and only plays well in her home state. Had she won years ago when everyone annointed her the Second Coming, I’d probably watch, in the mean time she’s no differnent then any other woman on Tour trying to get her first W.

don't watch just for Wie...
…right now, she’s not really worth watching the way people watch Tiger. Her game is very immature and her caddy is afraid to give her serious advice. There are a dozen better golfers than her.
I watch women’s golf to learn more about how to play my game. The women play a straight fairways and greens game. Anything outside the first cut of rough is serious trouble more often than not, and the short games are not nearly as good as the men’s – BUT – the slower swing speed is easier to follow, so you can pick up more things for your own game.

That was the first thing I noticed when I went to a LPGA event for the first time – they play a style that I recognize more than the PGA Tour guys, though I outdrive the women.
