Phil Mickelson Shuts Up Peter Kostis for One Day
Defending Northern Trust Open winner Phil Mickelson scorched Riviera a la General Sherman on his was to a round of -8 (63) in the opening round of the tournament. He leads by a shot on a day that featured great scoring and the delightful reappearance of Scott McCarron. The PGA Tour debut of Ryo Ishikawa saw him shoot 73 and leave him in the dust on a course that normally doesn't play this low.
Meanwhile, Mickelson's great round had magnificent timing as Peter Kostis finally had a chance to stick it to Phil in print. This, from Geoff Shackelford's site, is a press release from CBS Sports (that I don't get for some reason):
The only thing consistent about Mickelson’s game right now is his inconsistency. Clearly he didn’t put enough time in preparing in the off-season. It seems like he would have found some answers. He is changing equipment almost weekly and it’s hard to really develop your golf swing when you always have different sets of iron and clubs in the bag. You need to pick something and stick with it.
Just when Kostis had Phil pinned down like the rest of us already have for overthinking and overplanning with his coaching staff, it clicks for Lefty.
Someone may well crack an egg over Peter Kostis's face this weekend.

now that's inconsistency

I believe the hallmark of inconsistency would be the depths of Phil’s performance last week compared to the heights of his performance yesterday. I don’t disagree with Kostis’ sentence at all.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
Like I said to court, I don’t believe in Mickelson til he does it for four rounds – even if he doesn’t win.

A 62 today - not bad
The defending champ is a pretty good player, ya think?
