Network Golf Coverage Last Week Was Hurting

There's no doubt that Mother Nature really stuck it to the PGA Tour this past weekend at Pebble Beach.  It shortened the event to 54 holes, leaving us with very little coverage of the professionals in the tournament.  We got a Saturday filled with celebrity coverage.

Usually, that day is pretty fun because celebs are interspersed with the actual professional tournament.  This weekend, though, we got very little action from the pros that were in contention.  We got plenty of Lefty, who was about a million shots out of the lead and playing like a man who cannot shake off the rust.  (And he even played in the PGA Tour off season!)

So, what gives?  Sal Johnson noticed and offers an observation:

[T]he biggest problem with Saturday’s show was the inexplicable lack of attention it paid to the leader, long-bombing Dustin Johnson. Guess how many shots viewers saw Johnson make during the three days of telecasts? (Golf Channel airs the Thursday and Friday shows, but CBS personnel produce them) None. Guess how many shots we saw by Mike Weir, the eventual runner-up? Three. It's like CBS is now doing shows like the ones from the 60s, very limited. Someone must have pointed out this lack of coverage to CBS producers because the opening of Sunday's show featured highlights from the previous night's Golf Central of Johnson's round at Poppy Hills.

Look, I didn't know much about Dustin Johnson either.  But we had major champions in Retief Goosen and Mike Weir close to the lead.  How come we didn't see more from them?  Frankly, that's more interesting to me than watching Paul Blart shank one.

What say you?  Were you happy with Bill Murray and Huey Lewis?  Apparently, those were the only two guys on the course.  And a fellow named Timberlake.

getting what you pay for

This one and the celebrity thing a couple of weeks ago are about those who pay to play hoping to resurrect their careers by getting their mugs on television, not those who get paid to play. They are not real golf tournaments, they’re exhibitions. Writers who wanted real golf this past weekend should have watched the LPGA.

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

yup

I mostly agree with D – the Saturday broadcast has degraded into celebrity following. There were very few shots from the pros shown. Saturday is the day the blimp guys get to show off, too – WOW – spectacular pictures.

Not sure what Sal is talking about, though. Saturday has been celeb day for a few years. Did he not notice that the final round was rained out ? Dustin Johnson would have gotten all kinds of coverage on Sunday/Monday had they played. Johnson got a lot of attention last year when he made his run on Sunday, then fell short.

I'll admit it...

I sort of enjoy the celebrity factor. It’s strangely appealing to me to see Hollywood folk crazy about the game of golf. Some of them are like a train wreck though – it’s painful to watch, but you just can’t turn away. And it just didn’t seem like Gary or David asked the best questions of the celebrities – Kevin James seemed almost annoyed when they were walking and talking…maybe it was the weather.

I only caught part of the ball moving on the green rule that David and Peter were trying to explain in the rain & wind, but I think that was good stuff to share with audience.

It was great to see Ken Venturi, too.

Chris O'Donnell

Did you see the sit down with Chris O’Donnell between 16 and 17 on Saturday when they did the slo-mo breakdown of his swing ? He was like a kid in a candy store seeing himself hit that shot while getting advice from 2 former PGA Tour stars. And this is a guy who makes his living in front of the cameras.

once a year...

it only happens once a year, if it happened more often i’d never watch. most celebs are useless and I can turn the channel on Saturay and expect to watch the pros on Sundays.

That's what I was going to do

But that darned storm ruined it!

I will admit that I enjoyed when some of the celebs had their swings broken down on video because their swings look a lot more like ours.

oh come on....

CBS coverage Saturday was awful

I watched a half hour and saw commercials and crap shots interviews of celebs and don’t recall seeing one shot by a pro. Turned it off hoping Sunday would be better. Well at least the LPGA put on a show that day.
