The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 2/13/09

Each day, we'll take a look at what happened yesterday in professional golf based on the three categories from the classic western film.

The Good

  • Michelle Wie, again - With a round of two under, she holds the lead entering the final round of the SBS Open at Turtle Bay.  On an extremely difficult day for scoring, Wie shined.
  • Angela Park - She had the best round of the day by shooting 68.  She catapulted herself into 3rd and in position to win.
  • Me vis a vis Retief Goosen - The Goose made my Fantasy Crystal Ball because he somehow dipped to the C-list.  By going low yesterday, he now leads in Pebble Beach by a deuce.

The Bad

  • Vaughn Taylor - Scoring at Spyglass is generally more difficult than the other two courses in the Pro-Am.  He proved that to be true and shot +3 at Spyglass Hill.  He dropped from -6 to -3.  Went from in contention to desperately wanting.
  • Davis Love III - C'mon, man!  You're supposed to carry the Commish to victory!  You're 8 out of the lead in the team competition!

The Ugly

  • Mika Miyazato - She started off her first LPGA Tour event very well.  Then she shot 80 yesterday.  That's a 10 shot difference.  That's ugly.
  • Anthony Kim - After peeling out of the gate in Malaysia, he came back with 65 in the second round.  He fired 71 in the third round today.  The sum of that tumultuous ride?  48th place.

Should I have the graphic up every day?  It might get a little tired, but I do like it.

Wie SHARES the lead…don’t forget Angela Stanford. Should be an interesting final round. Sitting here listening to Brandel Chamblee say that we don’t know how well Wie can close out a tournament…ummm….Brandel…yes we DO know…she’s terrible at it. Her combination of scoring blow ups and rules violations are a pretty good track record. What we DON’T know is if she can mature and learn how to finish.

Nice call on Goosen. I’m thrilled that he’s doing well.

How did Robert Floyd not make The Ugly ? Back to back 80’s with a chance to put up a third today at Poppy Hills ? Come on !

Borderline Ugly – definitely Bad – the entire xxx Golf Channel tournament crew with the exception of Faldo, Brian Hammond and Steve Sands. Just awful.

oh my lord...

…it’s time to get rid of Brandel Chamblee. He is now taking up residence in Michelle Wie’s backside. He just analyzed Wie’s chipping…on one hole…and he said that ONLY Wie and Phil hold the wrist angle when they chip. Give me a break.

The commercial for tonight’s final round says that this is the first time Wie has been in contention to win an LPGA event. EXCUSE ME ??? Apparently, to these people, “in contention” only means “in the lead”…oops.

The video people at xxx Golf Channel aren’t on the ball, either…or they are up Wie’s rectum as well. Dottie Pepper mentions that Wie has to be careful of her putting, that she was showing some weakness…while the video shows her rolling in a couple of 20 footers.

It was nice of them to mention that Angela Stanford hasn’t had a bogie all week, and she had 2 wins last year. Not sure how they managed to sneak that comment by the censors.

Tough call...

…Four GBU’s a week might end up getting too nit picky with no real context for the week. The bad first round of Anthony Kim (39 putts – YOW) was followed by a very good second round that got him into the weekend – and that ain’t bad.

Maybe one a week on Monday or Tuesday would be good – that way, the head shaking from Michelle Wie blowing a 3 shot lead on the back 9 of the final round might get a little perspective – after all, a rookie (with 48 career LPGA starts under her belt) might not look so bad…or it might look even worse. Or the incesant sucking up from xxx Golf Channel that is only going to get worse could move from Bad to Ugly. (I’m sorry – but skipping shots from the leader, but showing every shot of The Wie is crap)

I'm thinking

twice a week would do it. After the first two rounds so I could cover missed cuts, and on Monday to talk about the weekend results. Sound good?

sounds good...

…it gives a chance to make notes on some ugly golf that is usually forgotten by Monday.
