The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 2/12/09
I'm going to start doing a quick summary of the day that was in golf each day on the blog. I won't go into the same amount of detail as game stories that you might find through the major publications or other blogging pals that do in depth summaries. I'd like to use these as a jumping off point for talking all things golf.

And if you have a better name for it, let me know. Here we go!
The Good
- Michelle Wie - She fired -6 round of 66 in her first round as a LPGA card holder. She usually plays well in Hawaii for obvious reasons, but this has to get the performance monkey off of her back right away. Eight birdies on your card will do that for you.
- LPGA Tour rookies - Vicky Hurst and Mika Miyazato are at -2. Stacy Lewis is -1. Ji Yai Shin is E. Not a bad start, though I would guess there are higher expectations on Shin that the others.
- The Beemer - Always seems like a few times per year that Rich Beem decides to find his form. Yesterday's first round at Pebble Beach was one of those times. He played his front 9 in five under par and rallied after a bogey at 16 for two more birdies.
- Angela Stanford - I said on LPGA on GNN that I expect big things of her this year. So far, she's delivered. So what if it's one round?
- Noh Seung-yul - A 17-year-old from South Korea, fired a 10-under 62 on Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Malaysian Open on the European Tour. Ryo Ishi-who?
The Bad
- Last place - On the LPGA side, it was Young Jo with an 85. Robert Floyd fired 80 at the Pebble Beach event. Who? Floyd finished 48th in the event last year, but missed his other two cuts. Ohhh, I get it now.
- Se Ri Pak - There's not much talk of Pak these days among the Korean elite and an opening round of +7 (79) will not help.
- Anna Rawson - Last week, she played an angry Sunday to finish 10th in Australia. That didn't carry over to Hawaii where it isn't nearly as hot. She fired an 80.
The Ugly
- Vijay Singh - Yeah, he doesn't lead the tournament, but he came in for a landing at even par yesterday. He can't be upset about that. But one birdie and one bogey all day? Consistency is boring.

The Classics never go out of style...
…any time you can work a Clint movie in – do it. It may seem like a cliche – but it’s one I never get tired of. Keep the name.
Good first effort, too !
I would add the LPGA broadcast crew outside of Brian Hammond (except for his incessant references to Wie). They still laugh at their own “jokes”, hold their breath throug a sentence followed by an annoying exhale (a horrid FM dj affectation). The worst part of the night was giving Se Ri Pak “100% credit for the Korean golf explosion on the LPGA” – leaving out Grace Park, who came on the scene just 2 years later.
Then, to add insult to injury, they said that there were kids in Korea watching Pak saying “well if SHE can do it – I sure can.” Nice – real nice.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Hang on...
…a guy coming off of knee surgery shooting even par is “Ugly” ? “Consistency is boring” ? Come on – picking on one round in a vacuum ? What about the other 17 who shot even par without knee surgery ? -1 or +1 isn’t “consistent” ?

I had to come up with something
Haha, I’m still trying to figure out what’s ugly about golf other than Ryan Moore’s PING headband.

I like it!
Athough I might have put Robert Floyd in the Ugly category – of course he was consistent with a 40-40. Or maybe Patrick Sheehand with a triple at Spy Glass. I have to agree with Courtgolf – Vijay doesn’t deserve to be called ugly.
You're right
I definitely need some non-fashion suggestions for what is ugly. Flipping Floyd and Vijay might be the right answer for this one.

80+
A Tour player shooting 80 or more needs be in the UGLY category. I can’t imagine the golfer disagreeing with that assessment.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
Perfect!
Now there is some good criteria for Ugly! Excellent suggestion.
Yeah
I think that makes ugly work a lot better. So, fashion and really bad scoring are what we have so far.

80x2
if an 80 gets an Ugly…what does he get for back to back 80’s…AND the rare shot at having 3 80’s in a 4 round tournament ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
what?
You think someone who shoots 160 for two rounds is going to make the cut?
In the case of a limited field, no-cut event, wouldn’t a player who shoots 160 through two rounds withdraw to prevent further embarrassment?
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
No
They don’t want the media slaming them like they did Rory Sabatini after he withdrew from Tiger’s affair.

it's Pebble Beach
Everybody plays three rounds – then they cut. Four rounds – three courses. Everybody gets a round on each course.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
great title!
Might be even better if you used the Italian version “Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo”!
there's one in every crowd...
…geez dog – just show off a little there !! ok everybody – give HD a “Clint Squint” for that one. (lol)

Maybe I can do a translation in Babelfish

Sclaffy
All “sclaffy” shots should fall in ugly category.
