Camilo Villegas Major Winner 2009.
In this short time I’ve been on the planet I believe I know a lot about elite performance and recognising the potential of success in individuals. Having been a pro football (soccer) player for a short while followed by getting down to scratch at golf within 3 years I’ve been surrounded by the elite in their fields. I’ve seen players excel to greatness and others fall at the last hurdle.
I never bet on sport. I never do predictions on sport unless asked. Too many variables with such a fine line, and I mean a fine line between top and bottom, let alone 1st and 2nd. With the exception of a Mr. Woods. So note that what I am about to say isn’t taken likely and I will probably never do again as I’ll no doubt be proved horribly wrong.
Camilo Villegas will win a major championship 2009. Probably the US Open.
There, said it. Shoot me down. It’s just his latest performance in the last round of the Buick Invitational was truly magnificent. Composed, relaxed and in abundance of talent putting up an excellent chase. It’s not the first time either. He showed everything a champion needs. Everything but the win. The doubt in my mind that if he can pull off a major win is leading from the front. He didn’t get a chance to prove that to me yesterday night which is why I’m sticking my neck out. But if has the same mind set, attitude and belief as yesterday’s final round I know he’ll come up with goods.
Hell, I might even stick a tenner on it.

A major ? why not ?
but the US Open ? Camillo may have the guns of a pro rassler, but US Open rough, even the graduated rough setup, is a whole ‘nuther beast – and Camillo doesn’t keep the driver in the fairway very well.
maybe the PGA. possibly the British if he stays out of the bunkers. he could win the Mastes if he has one of those weeks where he is spot on with his approach shots. but not the US Open – at least not this year.

I would be less inclined to
say the US Open for the reasons court said – even with the Mike Davis setups. I would think his best chance would be the Masters. Lucky for him, the stars align and Tiger will likely not be at his best.

thats funny
The dude choked in the Buick Open, he doesn’t have what it takes to win a major.

say what ???
he “CHOKED” at the Buick ? a three round choke ? He posted -9 on Thursday, then stalled out the next three days. He didn’t choke – he just didn’t play well after one amazing round. Not unheard of – it’s very difficult to follow up a great round with another. There wasn’t a whole lot of great golf last week thanks to the weather. It happens – but “choke” is a strong word. The guy won back to back at the end of last year and played some spectacular golf on the weekend of The Tour Championship.

The Buick was his for the taking
but he didn’t step up and win it, instead he played poorly and lost a tournament he should have won.
In my book, thats a choke.

no doubt...
…but why beat on Villegas ? How often do you see a wire to wire winner ? Not very often – even if they put up a big first round.

I actually like Villegas
I just don’t think he has what it takes to win a major, maybe he’ll prove me wrong.

You gotta go out on a limb. I’m sure that the Portland Trailblazers thought that Sam Bowie was a slam dunk.

He's on it
It will happen. I wouldn’t rule out the U.S. Open.* He hit many shots out of deep rough last weekend with great force and precision—did you check out those arms? Most importantly, he has the attitude to stay in this game for the long haul. What a great sportsman he is. He genuinely seemed happy for Mr. Watney and certainly enjoyed the run. You can tell he loves playing and that’s why he’ll have a major sooner rather than later.
*Plus, after I play Bethpage Black for Golf Digest, I plan to give Mr. Villegas a few pointers on the course. ;o)

where's that towel ?
…here you go real, there’s a little something on the corner of your mouth. :-D (I think she likes the Villegas guns)
you are right about the shots he hit out of some pretty stiff rough – and if he can do that for 72 holes under US Open conditions and shoot par like he did the last three rounds at the Buick – he could be right there. In ’02, Tiger was the only player under par (-3) with Mickelson the only player at even par.
