Say Hello to the Waste Management Open

We all know that FBR is leaving as title sponsor of the drunken golfest played annually at the TPC Scottsdale.  But, we didn't know who is lining up to replace them as title sponsor.  Now we do.

It's Waste Management, according to the Golf Channel and Phoenix Business Journal.

There is a press conference today to unveil what is said to be a six year deal.

Waste Management already had a hand in this tournament, instituting a recycling program there with the help of Tour wives and tournament presenter The Thunderbirds.  You know, for all of those beer bottles and Solo cups that rain down on players after great shots.  Like, say, a hole in one by the best golfer in the world punctuated by raising the roof.  (The Tiger that we do know.)

You guys are a riot!

The PGA has to take what it can get at this point, don’t you think?

Waste Management has been around with the Tour in a while, so it made some sense for them to step in here.

True

PGA begging ? I can’t say I’m a fan of the tournament…all that shouting on the par 3, I’d be tempted to aim my tee shot at the idiots…with my driver !

lol Eas – that crowd is actually very respectful to the players on that hole. They cheer when the players come to the tee box, then quiet down for the shots and cheer once the ball is struck, then quiet down for the next shot.

of course – what goes on outside the confines of that hole….that’s something else altogether. The noise can be really distracting on 15 green…17 tee…and it can be heard a lot further away than that.

I’m wondering if WM is going to start giving sponsor’s exemptions to Big Break winners since they are one of the show’s main sponsors.

Good point

Watching it on TV, you are right, they do keep quiet for the players on that hole. Can’t really appreciate the noise the other players on other holes can hear…I guess it’s the same for everyone…and the pro’s know what to expect. I bet it takes some clearing up after everyone has gone home.

especially these days. look at the video RB put up – you can still see people standing along the hole. Today they have the entire hole surrounded with grandstands making it look like a miniature NASCAR track for 20,000 of your closest friends.
