Looks Like I Underestimated Things a Bit

A couple days ago I posted an article describing how the latest "transgressions" of Tiger Woods were being made into a bigger deal than they really are. Well, looks like I need to put my foot in my writer's mouth.

Turns out, Tiger has been a busy, busy guy. Reports now state that as many as 9 women (one of which a porn star) have been involved with Woods over the past 5 years despite being married to an absolutely gorgeous woman who gave him two children. In my previous post I stated that no man is prefect and we are all human and prone to making mistakes. Well... when you consider the growing number of "mistakes" coming out of the woodwork and into the mainstream headlines... well, Tiger has become a large disappointment for many fans, myself included. However, fandom might not be the only thing that golf could lose because of this whole bad situation.

As Bill Dwyre, a writer for the Los Angeles Times states in a recent article:

Its June 2000 poll on Woods listed his public perception as follows: favorable, 88%; unfavorable, 5%; never-heard-of, 2%; no opinion, 5%. It took the same poll last week. His ratings were favorable, 60%; unfavorable, 25%; never-heard-of, 1% and no opinion, 13%. Numbers don't always don't tell an accurate story. These seem to.

The numbers addressed above are in response to the PGA Tour losing sponsorships at an alarming rate due to a few factors (including the recent recession)... but none of which more in the limelight than the dropping approval rating of the PGA's shining star. Furthermore, despite the fact that many of Tiger's sponsors have publicly stated they will continue to support him, this might not be enough to save many of the oldest tournament stops on Tour.

Dwyre continues:

Speculation is that there could be as many as a dozen PGA events running without title sponsors this year. The exact number is tough because the PGA is both tightlipped and out there now, beating the bushes to fill some of those voids. The [Bob Hope Classic] was low key about Chrysler's departure, until Monday, because that's what the PGA wanted.

While the above might not be a direct correlation to the Tiger Woods saga, PGA officials are still preparing for the worst by saving as much money as possible in case of a financial downturn. Looks like now is the time when these reserve funds are needed more than ever, and the recent news in the tabloids isn't helping matters in the least.

Only time will tell if Tiger's "transgressions" will cost him more than his marriage and children. For me, I am disappointed in someone I looked up to for years. However, the coming months and years will be the true test of character for a man who is in desperate need of an image save. With wife Elin moving out today from their $2.5 million home, he might have more than enough time to work on things.

and yet the question still remains...

…how is ANY of this our business ? The only people getting hurt are inside the walls of the Woods household.

It's not

The coverage has gone absolutely bananas.

However, there is one part of the story I’m still interested in – was Tiger driving his car under the influence of something that night? “If” the rumors are true, it appears he may have skated out of some serious charges.

yeah – I heard a story on the radio this morning that one of the officers who originally said that alcohol wasn’t an issue is now checking for blood tests…yeah…the guy who writes speeding tickets is now bucking for TV face time and a CSI spot.

How do you know that?

how do I know that the FHP officer on duty who answered the 911 call is a POLICE OFFICER who writes speeding tickets most of the day or night ? He’s not an investigator – he’s a patrol cop.

So you are saying

He was acting outside of the scope of his job requirements? Any proof of this?

he went back to the hospital to look for blood tests after signing off that Woods wasn’t under the influence. following up is the job of investigators – not ticket writers. but hey – it shows initiative.

So you've confirmed

That his actions are outside of the scope of his job requirements – has the FHP made a statement in that regard?

I’m just trying to follow the rules here. If I’m understanding you correctly – it’s a bad thing to discuss personal issues that paint Tiger (who none of us really know) in a bad light, but it’s ok to question the integrity of a police officer (who none of us really know)?

I never said anything about his integrity…though he DID say in his report that there wasn’t any alcohol involved and he didn’t appear to be under the influence. Past that, it’s the job of an investigator, not the job of a beat cop. It wasn’t until these women started popping out of the woodwork that he decided to go back and look around.

And how is that not questioning his integrity?

ok – you tell me – did he lie when he said there were no signs that Woods was under the influence ? Did he make a statement he shouldn’t have ? Does he think he screwed up and wants to double check ? or is he jumping on the bandwagon ?

I'm confused

You said you heard that one of the officers who originally said that “Woods wasn’t under the influence of something that night” is the same person that is checking for blood tests. I assume you are talking about Joshua Evans (the FHP officer whose name is on the subpoena for medical records)? I haven’t found any evidence that Joshua Evans is acting outside of his authority, or that he absolved Tiger initially of any wrongdoing. He was most likely the investigator assigned to Tiger’s accident.

The subpoena Mr. Evans filed was dated November 30th, and Sgt. Kim Montes of the FHP reported on December 1st that they were not pursuing criminal charges. It sounds like a believable timeline to me. I don’t see any additional information showing that this police officer is vying for attention subsequently.

It would be very interesting to see which Florida politicians Tiger will be contributing to

or has been contributing in the past. They have certainly covered his ass. I am sure he will be returning the favor. I wonder if the sheriff is an elected office in Florida as well.

I can’t imagine if any other common driver, let alone a black person, who just ran over a fire hydrant and ended up in a tree and laying on the ground passed out would not have been investigated for DUI without some official stepping in to halt the investigation. What an obvious cover up by the state and local Florida officials.

Spotlight ?

Tiger always Loved the spotlight and the attention he got when he was winning with all his fist pumping and hot dogging and blah blah blah. Now he must “Man Up” and take the good with the bad now that it HAS been made public. Is it anyones business ??? probably not, but I wouldn’t let my kids look up to him as a role model if I had any.

why not ? can’t a role model be “human” and have lessons to teach for good AND bad ? A good parent would point out the parts that made him a champion – his discipline and drive and love for the game. But when things like this come up – that parent can show the kid the dangers of getting too big for your britches and thinking you are above it all. On top of that – the good parent can teach lessons in forgiveness and not taking up offenses for other people, and most of all, how to treat the most important relationships in your life.

What little life this one-eyed 60-year old has will not be spent

on this crap. I want to talk about Kobe, Plexico, and Barry Bonds. I’m seeing a pattern, except Tiger is only GOING bald.

Other than the tree and the fire hydrant, is there even one single thing documented as being actual, not fictional? I’m serious?

He was drinking. He was not drinking. His head was bleeding. Only his lip was bleeding. He has banged three women. Seven women. Eleven women. 3,287 women. Elin has moved out. Elin is getting $100M. Elin is okay now…
