Graeme McDowell Took Advantage of Tiger's Misfortune
It's been a tough week for Tiger Woods. The whole debacle forced him to withdraw from his own Chevron World Challenge. The man that replaced him in the field in California was Graeme McDowell. The Irishman just came off of nearly winning the World Cup with Rory McIlroy.
McDowell was getting to play in an elite field with three of the major champions in it. And, for the first time, this tournament was offering world ranking points. Meaning for McDowell that he would get a chance to rack up some serious points at the end of the year if could play well in a very small field.
McDowell took full advantage. It looked like he had a chance to win the tournament. Were it not for Jim Furyk, he may well have. With a birdie at the last, McDowell finished second thanks to some help from Lee Westwood in pushing his short par effort at the final hole.
When McDowell was staring down his birdie at 18, he was set to move up to 42nd in the world. As Dan Hicks pointed out on NBC, by virtue of making it, McDowell moved up four extra spots to 38th.
McDowell is essentially assured a berth in the majors - or at least the Masters - thanks to his play this weekend. The top 50 in the world at the end of the year get into the Masters. McDowell began the weekend at 55th.
Good on McDowell to take full advantage of a lousy situation.

And the winner is?!?
Yes, there’s always something or someone that produces a second place finish… Prompts that age old question: “Did Furyk win or did McDowell lose?” Anyway, Jim gets a trophy that would look great in any child’s nursery.

Graeme McDowell picks up the phone last week and
the voice says, “Graeme, good morning, it’s Greg McLaughlin, the tournament director at the Chevron World Challenge. We have an opening. Any interest in filling in this weekend? Second place pays somewhere around $750,000. Might help you out buying Christmas presents this year”.

How 'bout dem "Saints" !
What a great win in DC. Gotta love DB. Well on his way to a potential MVP. I’m hoping they win’em all.Alas,….I didn’t put any $$$ on them early, and now ya can’t get any odds. The bookies seem to feel the Super Bowl is already in the bag for N’Orleans. They may be right. The Cards might have a say in this if Wanner can stay healthy (concussion issues)
you're still away,...choke on it !

Cards looked real
tough last night. Any team that holds Peterson to 19 yards has to be good. I like Warner and hope they keep it going. The Saints got quite a few “breaks” yesterday, but that’s what helps make champions.

How 'bout dem "COLTS"!!!
Just tied a record for consecutive wins…. undefeated this season, same as N.O…. Colts seem to be “flying under the radar”…

Question
Why did this limited field event get rating points and the Nedbank in S.A. did not? I never saw a mention of points for that event.
by pingforever on Dec 7, 2009 9:37 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Because the Nedbank SA was being played on the other side of the world and the Chevron was on live from California

I think you meant
“ranking” points. I don’t know the answer, but the points got McDowell into the Masters.
by em66 on Dec 7, 2009 9:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
ranking yep
I think this year was the first time the Chevron was sanctioned to hand out world ranking points. Ryan or Court we need clarification ?

Tiger's Misfortune?????
It looks like Tiger’s misfortunes are up to 10. Maybe they are “cheaper” by the dozen.

I Wonder......
Maybe TW has been a busy boy, but this many “ladies”(more polite than skanks) coming forward leads me to guess that some of the late arrivals might just be piling on to get their 15 minutes without having actually “done the deed”. Reminds me of my favorite George Burns joke. George would take a puff off his stogie, look into the camera and say, " I have a friend who just turned 85, and he tells me he’s having sex three times a week". (Shakes his head in disbelief). “Can you believe that? Three times a week at his age.” (Shrugs and takes another puff) “Well, I guess if he can say that, I can too!”

Guys Please
Can we not take this article about Graeme McDowell’s second place finish down the Tiger Woods road???
by pingforever on Dec 7, 2009 3:01 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Sure, that’s cool. Just commenting on what was there in front of me. McDowell’s good fortune was linked in the article directly to Tiger’s failure to appear, hence em66’s reference to “Tiger’s Misfortune”… Well, I guess you’re right though. His name in the title and references in the first paragraph don’t make discussion of him necessarily germane in this context.

Handy.....Thanks, but
you don’t have to explain to Ping…..he knew exactly what I was referring to. I keep looking for Pings blog….you know, the one where he controls all the comments and articles, and decides what is and what isn’t said……. but I haven’t found it yet……if you run across it, let me know……lol

Oh, I see it is 3:30 and now it’s time to bring up Tiger……Ok, everyone it’s ok to talk about Tiger. Ping has started the conversation……so we now have his permission to continue on. Thank you so much Ping…….:(…… I’m really biting my tongue right now.

That was called irony.... Why do you keep engaging in this?
by pingforever on Dec 7, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Engaging in what??
I don’t know what would make you happy. I make a comment about tiger’s 10th woman and handicap responds then you come back and say “Can we not take this article about Graeme McDowell’s second place finish down the Tiger Woods road???” So we stopped.
Then 2 hours after my comment you make your own Tiger comment……..sooooooo….what’s up??

Hadn't heard that,
But the were interviewing some guy on the morning show (Today) that some doctor “expressed concern” about his copious use of prescription pain killers after his surgery. Obvious references were made to his condition after the wreck. em66… he said he was sorry and joined the conversation with some new commentary. Give him a break.
by handicapismyswing on Dec 7, 2009 4:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Handy.......yeah, whatever...
there are quite a few new things that have surfaced….including the 10th woman, which I mentioned earlier, and you responded to, but the King Ping busted us for that, so I guess next time I should say I’m sorry first then make my comment…..got it! Here goes….I’m sorry!!…… There is also a story that mentions Tiger’s lack of “safe sex” and after being with a former Porn star, all those involved may need some testing for STD’s. How many other people will that involve???

I don't know,
maybe ping is right. All this stuff is actually pretty disheartening for me, even if I do try to keep a sense of humor about it. Sooooo, it is five o’clock somewhere, and this day has driven me to drink (AGAIN). I am off to the local pub to hoist one with the lads. Tiger’s troubles will have to find others to pay attention for a while. Cheers to all!

Very depressing.
I’m just wondering how he will be able to show his face again. Especially if the numbers of women keeps rising.

Last thought before I go.
There is hope for Tiger. After all, I saw Mike Vick on TV yesterday. I’m outta here.
by handicapismyswing on Dec 7, 2009 5:24 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
lol – yes – but all Vick did was commit a felony….Koby Bryant was accused of serious crimes….Tiger hit a fire hydrant !…oh, and offended women who aren’t married to him. it may be a while before the grapevine cools off.:-)

My brother....
Offending women of any description is a bad idea. If you don’t believe me, ask the women in your life, if there are any! I have been with my wife now for 28 years, and I can count the total number of women I have had sex with during that time on one finger. Do the math. Tiger’s biggest problem is not the legion who keep popping up daily. It is the one he betrayed and disappointed at home. The grapevine is the least of his problems.

Handy.....great post!!!
You nailed it. He will eventually have try to recover from the “public relations” nightmare he has caused, but mending the home front will probably more difficult than any tournament or match he has ever had. Of course, if he doesn’t love his wife and/or doesn’t care about the marriage, then the home front won’t matter that much.
by em66 on Dec 7, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
All VERY good points, Handi – but not what I was talking about.
You posted that you saw Michael Vick on TV – but what you saw wasn’t what actually happened. Fox showed a contiuous string of people in Philly jerseys and Vick jerseys. Before the game, Vick was soundly booed. When he came in for his first play, he was booed again, but there was a smattering of cheers, which Fox keyed in on. By the end of the game, the Iggles and Vick fans were still there cheering for Vick, but there weren’t enough Falcons fans to drown them out.
What I wrote was a joke – people are willing to cheer for a guy who bankrolled and ran a dogfighting business for 5 or 6 years. People cheer for Koby Bryant after what he was accused of doing.
The part about Tiger is this – he didn’t commit a crime. He probably cut off his nose as far as his marriage goes unless he truly changes, or they make some sort of financial agreement (which takes it out of the range of being a real marriage in my book). Outside of his family – NONE of the women running around screaming that Tiger is some sort of mysoginistic ogre have any reason to be offended. ONE man screwed around on his wife – not ALL men.
And since you missed the joke (wouldn’t be the first of my attempts at humor that went unnoticed) – let’s ask about the other side of that equation. What about women who marry for money ? What about women who date men only for what he can give them ? What about women who have affairs ? And what about the women Tiger was sleeping with – don’t THEY reflect negatively on women ? (of course not – because that’s covered in the “woman code”)
It goes both ways. The POINT/joke of what I said was that Tiger’s biggest problem is that he angered/offended a gender that never forgets anything that can be used in their favor in the future – whether it happened to them or not.

Sexist bullshit... plain and simple.
Tiger is not the primary mysoginist here… it’s you. No women in your life, eh? Sad….

When you lump any group together...
You are making overly broad generalizations about women that are unfair and unfounded. That puts you in line for broad/sharp criticism. Didn’t mean to disappoint or offend, but I did intend to make a forceful point. Women are just as divided on all this as the rest of us, at least the many that I know. In polite circles we don’t make those kinds of jokes, and I just didn’t find it humorous.
