Equipment News & Reviews in December

I'm trying to put together some posts about equipment news and do a few reviews this month.  December is generally dead for golf tournaments and now seems like a great time to talk about equipment to get us all excited for the PGA Show in January.  And also when it gets warm again.

Let me know what kind of equipment stories that you'd like me to do.  They could be reviews of categories of products or specific ones, tips for maintenance of your clubs, or anything like that.

Just drop a word here about it or email me to let me know your thoughts.

No, but I’m going to do stuff that isn’t Tiger Woods-related. Gotta have a variety here.

Well – there is the new Bruce Sizemore line of putters. He broke away from the corporate suits that wanted to go in a different direction than he did, so he’s making a new line.

Could go the Ryan Moore direction with Scratch wedges and irons. Ari’s a good interview.

Irons

A while back a fellow blogger started talking about new irons. I had always changed drivers and putters every 4 years or so, but not my irons. Another blogger said try the Taylor Made 09 burners. So I did. Twice. I’m going to get them in the new year, but has anyone else purchased new ones recently ? I got 10 more yards easy with these, compared to my old Titlest DCI’s. I noticed all irons these days are half an inch longer shafted than mine. And of course, 20 years ago irons were bent 4 degrees strong for the distance thing. These Burners are bigger heads than I’m used to, but the results were great. I’m sold. Anyone else thinking of changing ?

I’ve been playing my original TM RAC irons since 2003. I’m going to get a new set in two weeks when I go down to Nike’s Oven in Texas, so I can let you know how the Victory Reds are.

Keep an eye on prices – with the new groove rules affecting clubs with more than 28 degrees of loft – and manufacturers having to start with the new “old” grooves starting in 2010 (but non-pros are grandfathered in until 2016) – a set of ‘09 clubs will have the “modern” grooves. Unless you’re planning on entering quailfying for The Championship, might as well go with what technology is out there to help us.

Club lies and lengths are crazy compared to what they were 40 years ago. I’ve seen new sets of clubs with 43 degree pitching wedges in the set…which means you needed to buy at least 3 wedges to fill in gaps.

Check this list of lofts out from a 1984 copy of Carl Paul’s Golf Clubmaking and Repair book compared with a set of modern Callaway X-22 irons:

1984: Callaway X-22
LW – never heard of it 60* – 35"
SW – 55* – 35 1/2" 56* – 35.25"
AW – excuse me ?? 51* – 35.5"
PW – 50* – 35 1/2" 45* – 35.5"
9 – 46* – 35 1/2" 41* – 36"
8 – 42* – 36" 37* – 36.5"
7 – 38* – 36 1/2" 33* – 37"
6 – 34* – 37" 30* – 37.5"
5 – 30* – 37 1/2" 27* – 38"
4 – 26* – 38" 24* – 38.5"
3 – 23* – 38 1/2" 21* – 39"
2 – 20* – 39" huh ?
1 – 17* – 39 1/2" say what ?

Thanks, after 13 years with my Titlests, I realise I got left behind somewhat.

Gap wedge

Yes, when they bent irons 4 degrees longer, hey, now we need a gap wedge. Mine is 52 degrees ( an old pitching wedge) When you think about it, it would have made sense just to add a 2 iron to the set, they just renamed them is all. Now, the shafts are half an inch longer than just 10 years ago. Driver 2 inches longer. no wonder those seniors can hit it so far, and the ball…well…a pro v is like an old two piece distance wise compared to the dear old balata.
